Are you not interested because of the daunting 2-3 day interview schedule, or because of the teaching demo? It's pretty standard practice to have a demo lesson, and the bigger schools often have longer interview schedules just to weed out the huge number of applicants. |

It's the 2-3 day interview process that i dont like. I don't mind the teaching demo. I know AEON has that too. NOVA for some reason doesn't require one. Another thing that's bothering me bout going to Toronto for the ECC interview is the SARS scare. I know that everything is being hyped up by the media, but I think what's scaring me is that they might detain those entering the US from Toronto. I heard that they might quarantine people for ten days. That's TEN DAYS!!! I'm not sure if it's true, but it's making me paranoid. |

Go to www.torontostar.ca to get the latest information on SARS in Toronto. I think that you will see that many of the recent suspected cases (and one death under investigation) have turned out NOT to be SARS. Maybe you should find out whether or not people coming from Toronto are really being, or likely to be, detained, rather than just getting paranoid about it. It`d be pretty silly to make a decision based on rumours rather than facts. Try the CDC website for the SARS travel advisories and up-to-date information.
If you think the long interview process is too much, you should also stay away from the other big schools, which also recruit in North America - I think all have 2 or 3 day interviews with teaching demos and the beginnings of training. |

hi guys, i got an email from the recruitment office in Toronto. They're asking me to come in for an interview, but I don't know if I'm interested. I read that they have this two (or maybe 3... im not sure) day interview/ orientation. I think that in the last part of the interview one would have to do a teaching demonstration. Is this really true or are they just making it seem like ECC only accepts the best applicants to teach in their schools?
thanks! |
I've never understood the two or three day interviews, especially for a job where they're going to train you. The Japanese management might see it as a way of finding out who will dedicate themselves to the company. That's a big deal in Japan. I've heard appalling things about character tests in Japanese job interviews. One of my students was once asked to stand up and sing in an interview for a standard office lady position.
The teaching test isn't really about teaching skills (they'll train you to teach according to their method), but about your classroom presence. Having a stereotypical teacher presence that the students can relate to is also a big deal. |

I have an interview with ECC in July in the UK and I'm a bit worried about it too - does anyone have any words of wisdom (or any tips on what NOT to do!!). |
