one of my neighbours has a rooster, but i have never seen it. i think it is on a terrace. i would think it would be a rather dirty pet, but if it is a hen that lays double-yoled eggs, it might be worth the hassle. |

how about a pet chicken?
do you think it is doable? |
Chickens just need a bit of ground space to scratch around, maybe
a 15 foot by 15 foot area would do for several of 'em (3?). I know
some people do have them, because there was a rooster (with a
real set of lungs) who used to crow near my place in Cihangir when
the first prayer call would go out in the morning. I don't know if there
is any difference in raising chickens for their meat as opposed to
for eggs... anyone? |

If you don't have a rooster, your chickens don't lay as much, and they feel sad and lonely. However, besides being noisy, roosters tend to rather violently rape the chickens between the hours of 9 and 12 in the morning, causing the chickens to screech and gabble on top of all the crowing. Neighboring roosters will always contribute their 2 cents to the crowing. Since a rooster has to do a certain amount of raping every day, you need to give him at least 5 or 6 chickens. If you have fewer than this, they will all have bald backs 2 weeks into spring because the rooster rips out their feathers while he's raping them.
But let's not consider the rooster as All Bad, despite the raping and the noise. I used to throw blackberries to the chickens, and the rooster would always run and take the choicest berries, and give them to his favorite chicken of the day. Not that this stopped me from using the rooster-whacking stick we kept in the coop to ward off the rooster while collecting eggs. His name was Ingmar and those little spurs on the backs of their legs, while useful in cockfighting, really hurt your ankles.
Anyone else remember that Looney Toons rooster who sang like Bing Crosby and made all the chickens swoon and Foghorn Leghorn was ever so jealous?
Double-yolked aggs are hard to bake with because they equal 1 1/2 eggs, so if your recipe calls for 1 or 2 eggs, it's tricky to work it out.
I've heard eggs keep longer outside of the fridge. I've also heard that once you put them in the fridge, you have to keep them there or they'll go bad really fast once they're out.
I would trust 31 over the American egg guy. Americans have this insane behavior about bacteria and food safety, which is why Americans always get more food poisoning when they're abroad-- they're weak and not immune to anything. I had the runs for my first 1 1/2 years here. In America, you can buy anti-bacterial carpet powder to use with the vacuum, anti-bacterial dish soap, anti-bacterial baby soap, anti-bacterial room spray, anti-bacterial whatever, and all our milk and meat is irradiated unless you splurge for organic, non-GM, antibiotic-free, non-BGH.... |

The censored word above refers to an illegal sport in which roosters are placed together in a ring and a bunch of drunk, sweaty bumpkins bet on which will kill the other first.

I used to work on a farm. With hippies. But when everyone's all farmy and dirty you don't notice the smell. The only reason we didn't kill Ingmar and make him into soup is that everyone but me was veg, and roosters are tough and gamy anyway.
I heard Ingmar was carried off by a fox over the winter and despite everything I was a little bit sad. |

i'm really confused...
who should we listen to, american egg board or eggspert 31?[/quote]
Of course they don`t make a distinction. I can`t be bothered to check the AEB website but no doubt they are a mouthpiece for battery farm owners who produce battery eggs by the billion. No doubt they also tell you that the eggs are produced without cruelty and are farm fresh. The British Lard Marketing Board tell you that eating lard brings wonderful health benefits, provides advice and recipes for chocolard and tell you that a spoon of lard has less calories than a spoon of sugar.
Anyway buy your battery eggs from Gima, keep them in the fridge for weeks like your Washington apples and enjoy. Of course you could shop twice a week in the street market, not have to put your eggs in the fridge and eat fresh delicous eggs and have a choice between I yolk or two. |
