Casual, it could be to your advantage to get a hold of the union at Nova. They have a website at www.novaunion.com or email the Nova union president at [email protected].
Your job at the school has probably been negotiated between Nova and the school with an illegal gyomu (service) contract. It has to be a haken (dispatch) contract. There is more information on this at the ALT issues section of www.nambufwc.org (the Tokyo union for foreign teachers).
Japanese schools were hiring Japanese teachers with illegal gyomu contracts as well until recently, but they were eventually forced to quit since it is illegal. However, they keep on doing it with foreign teachers. And that is blatant form of discrimination. |

Thanks.
I just had a quick look through those pages and it was quite an eye opener.
But it seems that the government are well aware that BOEs are using these illegal contracts but are in all honestly doing sweet FA to cut down on it.
Without wishing to sound too ignorant, the Government dont really care about this system otherwise they would clampdown on it. |

Japan is a xenophobic, racist country. There is no law in the land that has ever stopped anyone, from the Minister of Education down, from being racist and discriminatory when it comes to employing foreigners. Its their country, you learn to live with it. I worked a national university for four years and saw discrimination first-hand.
the main thing is the BOES dont want to have to deal with directly hiring and managing non-Japanese speaking foreigners, dealing with all their complaints and whinging, dealing with unions over working conditions and fighting over contract terminations. Much easier to hand the whole thing over to the private language companies to deal with. |
