I freely admit that my dislike of the "Carry on" series is purely subjective. I'm not going to put a disclaimer in front of everything I write which reads:"This is my personal opinion so don't take it as universal truth" because when someone says anything it is taken as his or her personal opinion.
We don't need a Brit v. Yank thing here as my dislike of "Carry on" is based not on where it comes from but its content. I love Yes, Prime Minister, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, Black Addler, Happiness, The Office and Little Britain among other British shows and movies but "Carry On", "Benny Hill", "Dinner Ladies" and "East Enders" among others I don't care for. It's just a matter of taste. |

The place I was teaching was very British oriented at the time, and had a small group of teachers who all used to hang out together.
Why waste time with pointless questions like "How would you motivate some bored teenagers", or "Tell me about some part of your teaching you're especially proud of". I mean let's cut to the chase with the important stuff! Consider posiible candidate resposes:
1) "Er..er..er.." - candidate obviously can't think quickly on their feet.
2) "I've never heard of them/never seen one" - candidate clearly has no grasp of true British cluture.
3) "I don't think that's an appropriate question to ask at an interview" - candidate devoid of sense of humour.
4) "I think they're sexist" - candidate clearly devoid of sense of humour AND will probably be annoying person to work with.
5) "I think Carry on ..." (doesn't matter which) - candidate clearly a quick thinker with a sense of humour whose had a solid upbringing and who'll be able to wax lyrical with very bored British teachers who've been overseas so long they aren't familiar with much more recent comedy and like to reminise about such things. (And who like to baffle the recently employed American teacher by repeatedly quoting bits at each other and doing bad Kenneth Williams impersonations after one too many beers).
Big corporations would pay recruitment psychologists a fortune to come up with an interview question that'd tell them so much! |
