Lauramarie some of these guys are Japan greedy and they want to keep Japan to themselves and theyve never had a WHV before and they think they can give you sound advice about a WHV? I don't think so. Listen up girl because this is one Canadian that has done a WHV.
On my application I put travel as my main purpose of going to Japan but I also put "work to supplement my travels" There is nothing wrong with that! The WHV allows you to work because its a work visa also but some of these people on this board just don't want you to come here because they are Japan greedy! Did Paul mention to you the organization in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyushu that help you find WORK? Yes there is one that have job postings and they give you a letter of recommendation when you go in for interviews for your job. There are many teaching and non teaching jobs that you can get while you are there, I knew many people with no college degrees but with WHV's teaching English making 200,000 to 300,000 YEN a month.
And yes this WHV organization helped me find a full time job. Finding a place to live is easy as pie and if you are in Tokyo then go to Sakura house they are a foreigner friendly organization that will provide you with good housing at a cheap price. Here are the links the first one is the WHV offices in Japan link that help you find work and the second is Sakura house. If you have anymore questions please pm me.

This link below has info and links to housing organizations for foreigners in Tokyo and Osaka.

P.S. I knew a guy that washed dishes for a year while he was in Japan making 200,000 YEN a month yeah it's not great money but he had a enough to travel and have fun with which is the main purpose of a WHV. |

We are not greedy, just reminding people that many language schools do not hire people with no degrees, and it requires a lot of time and money to find a job. I have not done WHV myself, but you have to keep in mind time of year and availability of nonteaching jobs.

Tell me where it says on the MOFA website that WHV is a work visa. Yes you can work on it, but its a visa only for certain nationalities for a limited period and unavailable to Americans.

What if the OP is an American?

I have often mentioned the Working Holiday Makers Association website when looking for jobs. What I did say is that immigration frowns on you looking for and securing work before you arrive in the country or sounding as if your intention is to come here to work. You are supposed to look for work after you arrive. It is not a regular work visa, but a holiday/touring visa that lets you work while you enjoy Japan..

So how much of the country did you actually get to see while you were here, or was your whole time spent working?
P.S. Stosskraft neglected to mention that he has a couple of years ESL teaching experience before he came here.

Well I have seen quite a bit of Japan or at least the major highlights, while being on a WHV.
Cities I have seen.
Tokyo
Kyoto
Hiroshima
Nara
Osaka
Chiba
Mt.Fuji...I know this is not really a city, but you know what I mean.
Plus several others in Tochigi prefecture.
I have only been here 6 months. So I have been working and traveling..exactly what my ambitions were originally and what the WHV is intended for.
