I don't see the problem with capable 18 year old chinese person traveling over to Canada and to teach chinese if there was such a demand. Why do people keep asking this question?

A degree is just a piece of paper that represents 3 or 4 years of sticking to a commitment and an adverage level of intelligence. It determines nothing just like age.

How many immature morons were in your graduating class in Uni, let alone how many immature morons are in teacher college or working as elementary school teachers all over Ontario or, if you will, esl collegues?

Anyways, congrats on your luck and your job.

Thankyou for all the positive reinforcement, I really appreciate it. No news on my visa yet. However, my co-worker just received hers the day before it expired, so I'm expecting the same kind of last minute situation. Currently I'm working under an "L" visa. It's just a 90 day entrance visa and I remember signing a paper stating that I would not work under this visa. Oh well.. what can you do.

Hi Bethany,

Just to let you know, my school has teachers teaching on legitimate visas who haven't gone to college yet. If you get a TEFL cert, it will improve your chances a lot as well. It can be done. If this school can't do it and you want to stay in China, explore your options. Also, lots of young people here sign up at a Chinese university and take language classes for a couple of hours a day and do private lessons for cash on the side.

I know some fairly mature young people here, and I think they can do a fine job, especially teaching kids. Teaching kids requires a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm, which 18 year olds usually have in abundance!

That said, I am glad you are learning about China and how to protect yourself here. Be careful with your trust and you're halfway there. I wish you luck!

From what I understand you can't teach on a L type visa. It's illegal. How did you avoid getting caught? I just don't understand why all schools hiring foreigners don't just issue the Z type visa before you even go to China. I heard stories that people went to countries on tourist visas and of course they did not legally have to pay you. Some will ask you to go on a tourist visa so they can take advantage of you. Did you get your Z visa yet?

No I haven't got my Z visa yet, but instead they extended my visa another 60 days. They were talking about getting me the Foreign Expert Certificate which they said would enable me to stay in China a long time. But I'm just staying for this one semester so there's no point for them to go to all that trouble. I'm heading to Thailand once my visa runs out and I might look into getting a job there, but I don't know what kind of luck I will have with that. So if nothing turns up there, I'll be heading home in February.

From what I hear it's real easy to find a job there. Especially considering the fact you have some experience. I've thought of going to Thailand myself. I understand that neither of us have degrees. Are you just going to go on a tourist visa run every month or two? If you know of any possibilities of getting a work permit (even though we have no degrees) will you let me know? Thanks.
