They are too busy with Jihad and constructing the New Cakliphate to worry about TESOL. |

You've been in the ME too long with all its conspiracy theories.
BTW, I saw nothing wrong with the reading exercise. It was apparently a translation of the story. My students also enjoyed learning about other cultures, but why not mix in topics from their own culture? Familiarity with the topic makes reading easier and more fun for many of the students.

I didn't find anything amiss in the text. Quite a correct piece of English, if I may say so.
I'm an Indian Roman Catholic (originally Hindu Brahmin, by origin)
Please google Catholic + Goa + Brahmin, for a Catholic Brahmin is not quite commonly known. Ha! Apparently, caste played a significant role in conversion then. It still does in common life in India, now, though from the other end of the caste spectrum.
And, no, I have not lived in a Western nation before.
I hope that puts paid to any ulterior motives that may be attributed to my reply.
Back to the thread, I wonder if any or all English adaptations of Latin strictly used orginal material.
Here, I wish to say that any nation has liberty to adapt anything to its liking, as long as it's done within its boundaries.
Japan and a host of other countries adopted Buddhism and then adapted it to their culture.
The Western world adapted algebra to its own culture. Do you remember an algebraic unknown being described in Persian currency?
Cheers,
Lall.
Please, don't let us get ourselves locked. I'm saddened by the no. of interesting threads that get locked overnight just because some posters decide to flame each other on the previous evening. |

hmmm, check out the quote on the "cultural issues" link and I think it is clear what their mandate is.....
( paraphrase )
".....English language stands in need of the values of Islam.......to shield Muslims from materialism, utilitarianism, skepticism, relativism, secularism and hedonism...."
My goodness ! I better re-think my lesson planning and take out that grammar gap-fill on hedonism - modals are wicked, wicked things....

I think you have to be rather suspicious of a website that seems to want to connect Tesol with islam (language learning with religion/politics/social strictures/etc.)
Unless it is an excuse for spreading islam under the guise of Tesol, what is it's agenda? Who are the people running it? Why don't they come out of the dark? Are they bearded islamists who keep their wive(s) locked up and covered up? Do they attend conferences and give anti-western sermons?
I think it's time for some clarification. |

Personally I think that sounds ridiculously paranoid. It is a group of teachers with shared background and interests. Stop listening the Bush administration's fear mongering agenda...

Have you read this website (eslcafe) and seen the anti-Islamic comments? Are these coming from crusaders with an agenda?
