I have never understood the Gulf obsession with roundabouts with kitschy statues... in Oman it is the clock, castle, book, fish, pots, etc... and yes, they are definitely used for directions...
No fallopian tubes, but there is the 'incense burner' that looks distinctly like a flying saucer...
Al-Ain has a few too...

Dubai's done away with a lot of its roundabouts but the Fish Roundabout is a good one - just about marks the end of the bit of Deira which is penetrable by car. There was once a Falcon roundabout in Bur Dubai which had a statue of a falcon in such a tame pose that a friend of mine dubbed it the Budgie roundabout. Unfortunately, that's now a massive five-way junction with traffic lights which I always prefer to be red when I arrive so I have a chance to work out where I'm supposed to go. |
Yup... they're on Hotbird... just ask for a satellite receiver inwhich you can input the codes through the remote so you won't have to buy a one which needs a card. Unless you're planning to subscribe to Showtime/Art in the future. Orbit provides you with their own receiver/decoder as no other (i think) receiver can decode their stuff...
Coolness, thanks. Qr300 isn't a bad price either. Are the codes downloadable from somewhere then? Or do you pay to get the codes sent to you? |

^ but the Iskender kebab sucks. For computers i was very happy with the big book shop. I forget its name, Al Jarir? Also the shopping centre next to the Sofitel is good for computer stuff. |
Ah, another feature of giving directions in the ME: persistence of memory. In Abu Dhabi we have Electra Street, named for a shop that doesn't exist anymore, and here in Doha we have the Sofitel -- or do we? No, it's gone!! Been gone for quite a while, replaced by the equally seedy Mercure. But try asking for the Mercure on the street sometime, and all you'll get are blank looks. So "Sofitel" it will remain... |

Yes, please, Xtian or QC, please give us a quick overview on this. I am not a TV person.
Thanks. |

I am not a tv person myself either- I am fine with my "basic" satelite arabsat/nilesat - so I get channels like BBCWORLD, EURONEWS, MBC4 (sitcoms, documentaries etc....), MBC2, ONETV (sitcoms, reality tv, documentaries, movies etc....) and a few other European channels as well as the arab channels....the good thing with mine is that I don't pay per month as you would have to with showtime etc...to be honest, I very rarely watch TV unless I want to watch a show like The Sopranos or friends etc....

(Chuckle) Wondering if we need to have a "Satellite 101" day sometime.
I looked though a few Satellite stores on Mergab, (the end closer to Doha Clinic) didn't find the DigitALL World SFT190. Going to look more later. |

Really? Does it still have the black hole of Calcutta? The bar with philipina singers and where the Indian blokes dance with each other? The English pub on the 12th(?) floor used to do good food and was a quiet place to relax and read. |

Thanks. Does "basic" mean you are paying for a low-priced subscription, or did you just hook up a receiver/dish and start viewing free channels? |

I've bought mine about 2 years ago (in Saudi) so I'm sure they have new ones. Just ask them which satellite can open Multivision by inputting the codes by remote and I'm sure they'll offer you a satellite of that kind.
You can get the codes on the internet. I'll look for the site and pm you if u need it.
The only thing u need to know once u buy the receiver is how to change the LNB settings. Your Hotbird at home might be using LNB 1 and your Nilesat, LNB 2. So when you get your receiver, you need to know how to change this to fit your LNB configuration at home. Not that difficult really.
QC: Yup, with the usual free satellite, you do get a lot of channels...but sometimes you get tired watching the movies and shows over and over again...you can even watch some english shows on Alrai, Arirang (Korea), Dubai TV. New TV. |
