Mostly the Tay but we were lucky enough for the Orchy to be running wild that week so we took a day there as well. Popped a tube on one of the boats but did a 5+ anyway! The nice thing about not having any punters, you can do the rapids that are commercially unraftable Very Happy . My only regret was taking the course in November, rafting and snow are not natural partners in my opinion!

Rue_meridian, you're from Scotland right? One thing you might have against you is that you are from Scotland. BOEs and private schools here might be put off by that, thinking that no one, the teachers or students will be able to understand Scottish English. It's crazy, but that's what most of them think. If Altia dispatched teachers legally, you being from Scotland wouldn't be an issue. Dispatch law protects workers against discrimination like that. The problem is that Altia doesn't dispatch workers legally. One of the reasons they don't do things legally is in an attempt to get around dispatch law.

Rubbish. Scotland or England - both in Japan are Igirisu (=England (or Britain)). No discrimination. Most Japanese companies cannot distinguish between England and Britain. If you hold a Bristissh passport you are English/Ingirisu.

Similarly Canadians are not discriminated against.

Rue_Meridien,

So how did your Altia interview go? Did you get the job? Any feedback would be great!

Hey guys...sry for such a delayed response. I know if it was me I would want information as soon as possible. So ya about the interview...in short...it went well...although it really was a little weird at first how casual it was but we soon settled in. Couldn't believe how long it lasted! Grand total of 2 hours! But all in all my wife and I felt that it went well. Chris seemed like a really cool guy with a very neat vision of what english instruction in Japan could be. He asked us some pretty disarming questions at times (i.e. Do you believe you can change the world?) but I felt that those questions really led us to talk about the people we would be teaching and not just the 'job'. At the end he told us that we wouldn't have a response until mid-december because of the way things go with not knowing if there will be positions or not but we got a reply the next morning saying that we 'unofficially' had positions and that we would hear from him again as soon as he knew (my that was quite the run on wasn't it). So that was good news for us especially because it was such a long trip from the Scottish Highlands. How about you guys (the ones who had interviews)? How'd things go? You hear anything yet? Any of you the guy from Glasgow who had the train ride from hell?

Anyway...there you have it. Post if you have any more questions and I'll do my best to reply quickly. Although we're going to be spending the next few weeks in Canada and the beaches of the Dominican Republic...fleeing the SCOTTISH RAIN!!

Rue
