Does it make much of a difference if you get an M.A. in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or Education?

It depends. What do you see yourself doing ten or 20 years in the future?

Textbook writing/editing, University teaching...but who really knows where they will be 20 years down the line?

Some folks may think an MA in TESOl sounds too focused. If you're not sure you'll be teaching, you may want to go for a degree that is more 'general' sounding.

$270 an hour for university teaching in Japan? [boggle] Wow!

I'm curious, how is that possible? Do you have a high monthly salary, yet are only required to be "on campus" a few hours a week?

I will teach 6 classes a week. 90 mins each. 2 days a week. This 9 hour workload may be good, I am not sure, but I have heard of others doing the same. 30 weeks a year but national holidays etc bring it down to 56 days. There is no need to be on campus ever. Again not sure if this is standard but others have said the same. A very good salary divided by 252 which is in effect the hours I work brings the figure I stated earlier. I will have to mark a few tests a year, but other than that......nothing.
The main reason for my post isnt one of ego, though I dare I say I cant hide my satisfaction, but rather it is one of allowing others to see that there are some very good opportunities in TEFL. Japan still offers the classic TEFL lifestyle and the money if it is approached the right way.

Sad I only make 300 dollars a week if I work 40 hours a week. Since I only work 24. I make less then you make an hour. In canada non-tefl related.

I have a MA in ELT, but only one year of part time teaching experience. When I was hunting for jobs in Japan. I didn't even get interviews for some of the high paying University type jobs. That could also be because I'm in my early 20s and perhaps too young. I did get offers from several language schools but not many offered me extra money for the degree. I'm hoping that once i get more experience, I can get the better paying jobs.

Yes age would go against you here. At my interview I was told that part of the reason for my being hired was that it was felt that the department needed an energetic younger teacher. I am nearly 40!

I would certainly be in my element here, then, since I am 40 now! Very Happy

However, as I mentioned in my previous posting on this very thread, I am here to stay in Wuhan, China, for quite a while, since I have a family and a mortgage. I may not get the equivalent of anywhere what certain individuals claim they are getting in Japan, yet I am making four times more now compared to what I was getting when I came to China four years ago, so my wife and I are quite happy with that as things stand at the moment.

Whether I will get anything as a result of gaining the master's degree that I am going to start within three months, who knows? I guess that, two years down the road, I will do. However, I am sure that my being older will have little to do with any new position I may - just "may" - be offered, since I am working with a bunch of highly experienced teachers at my present school, anyway.
