I visited Guangzhou briefly- aside from Shamian Dao, I thought the old backstreets just away from the river were great. Looked wonderfully Chinese in a turn-of-the-century, pigtails-and-rickshaws kind of a way. Definitely a good area to learn some majiang and drink some tea, I would say.
