One thing I will add belatedly to this thread is this. If you think teaching advanced students is what you want, so be it, but if you think they are any easier than beginners, I would beg to differ. Advanced students, especially those whom you teach for their specific careers, need special care, and that usually requires not just knowing their lingo and discourse. Get some training.

To answer an earlier question, yes, one can get a master's degree online from a distance program.

If you can read and write Chinese, you should consider applying to law firms in Beijing or Shanghai.

As far as I know, any foreigners doing business in China must hire a Chinese firm to handle the legal paper work. I met a guy with a JD from Tulane in the USA. He used to post here on Dave's.

Either way, he worked for a large firm in Shanghai as a translator. The firm paid him, but he basically worked for the foreign client translating the Chinese documents for them and acting as an interpretor in meetings.

After those ten years, my only concern was the future. For the most part, the profession does not provide security beyond the contract period and certainly doesn't provide retirement pensions/benefits beyond what you can invest on your own. Fortunately, six years ago, I was hired by the federal government to do the same job (including extensive travel) and have been with it ever since. I don't worry now about my future as the government has the best retirement benefits on offer.

I agree. It can be hard to save. My advice is to find your niche. Some people can make money online, just look at Dave's Smile
teach extra and save
earn extra cash by taking photos, writing, etc
start their own retirement funds
Buy stocks, bonds, CDs
Put money in high interest accounts

As for us, we decided to get into property.

This is exactly why I am going back to the US. I plan to do two months abroad every year and ten months in the US. I will have to work hard to make it work out but I can do it.

Plus, I will probably end up seeing more countries but doing one or two month summer contracts than I would signing a contract to work in another country for a year which leads to two years, and then three, etc.
