From scanning through the posts on this thread and from what teacherbrian has provided here, I can only say that HE'S GOT THE PERMIT to work in wherever he is in China. The new permits are PERMITS FOR RESIDENCY and these ARE PUT IN THE PASSPORTS. The permits allow the holders to reside and work in China (whatever province the holder is in). I believe that the school has asked teacherbrian to only "REGISTER" at the police station and that's all (only a formality). So teacherbrian, why don't you go to register your address and check with the local police office what your status is here. If you don't speak Chinese ask one of your Chinese coworkers to accompany you there.

Have a good look at your new Visa. It should read 'foreigners resident permit' |
Bingo!

englishgibson, I hope you're right, but reading this post from the OP on the other thread may give you a different impression-
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?p=323568&highlight=#323568
- in which the OP writes:

| I have now been told that the police were supposed to give me a proper residence permit with a sticker on my passport or a green booklet, but when I went they just gave me a temporary residence permit, a photocopy. |
It appears the police did register him, which I took as a good sign. But I understood from his post that he did not yet have the RPF in his passport. |

OK, here's what ended up happening:
I tried making a bunch of phone calls, and with directory assistance ended up getting the number of the bureau in charge of residence permits. They didn't have anyone who could speak English until after 1:30, but were very helpful eventually. They told me to come to their bureau in Pudong ASAP with a photo, passport, PSB permit, business licence of my company, application paper for my work permit, etc. I then phoned my boss and told her the problem and eventually she contacted this bureau and got the information and helped me. The response was, "Whoops! We had no idea!" Needless to say, I was not amused... The next day I went with someone from my company to the bureau in Pudong. I was very worried that I had overstayed my visa, but miraculously there was not a problem as I had only overstayed for a week and they were very helpful. I just went to another department for people who had overstayed their visas. I found the centre to be very user-friendly, modern building and short waits! Big difference from the PSB place near the Bund. If I had waited a month, the fine would have been 5000 rmb. I had all of the papers and they told me that it would take a week to process and to come pick it up and pay 400 rmb for it. I was very relieved although I will have to make sure that my company gives me the money for it; we had a bit of an argument over who should pay. It says in my contract that the employer should pay, but they didn't want to pay a huge fine. However, as it's only 400 rmb it is not nearly as much of a problem. |

This 400 RMB figure you mentioned sounds like it might be the documents' fees, rather than a fine. You think that's possible?
Congratulations on your moving this along. |
