I don't really see how one could use manga in any deeper way.
|
I don't know why not. I mean, I've seen people build lessons around newspaper ads, and I think manga texts are a bit richer than that. *G* If we'd used manga, or even interesting short stories, in my Chinese reading classes, maybe we would have actually learned something. (Our textbook was all articles on Taiwanese politics. You would think that if they were going to insist on academic subject matter, they could have at least given us a variety of fields to read about, since only a few of my classmates were actually poli sci types.) |

i use them in my kids classes sometimes. i enlarge a page of maybe doraemon, then white out all the japanese and make more copies. then the kids can write their own comics in english. some of them are pretty good too...
upon the recommendation of one of my students, i started reading Naruto on the train this morning...not bad so far, but alot of words i dont know so its kind of hard going at the moment.
and lajzar, my coworkers help me with Shin-chan jokes that i dont get. they dont care at all that i read Shin-chan and definately dont look down on me for it. |

ok, I see I didnt phrase it too clearly.
The manga that started this thread, Shin crayon foulgob, is written for a very young age group - lower end elementary school kids. There are of course manga aimed at various age groups up to and including adult audiences. And not all adult targetted manga are pornography either.

Not at all... I was just poking fun at you. Adult book (porn)... adult manga (pornografic comics). Lighten up. For someone who's worried about being mistaken for an otaku you sure do have a cute winged anime-poi avitar.
Another good (but old) title is Hayao Miyazaki's Nausica series. That one was great, but the pictures tended to be pretty small. Sometimes it was tough to read. |

Cheese and rice folks...
Manga is a critical learning tool for the foreigner who isn't enrolled in Japanese classes, lives in the middle of nowhere and has no one to speak english with.
A few select titles (and there are a lot, it's not unlike reading illustrated childrens' books) congruent with the reader's humour and taste can be a godsend.
I'll admit, there's a lot of trash out there, but the amount I have learned about Japanese culture and language both directly and indirectly from manga is truly astounding. Everything from individual words, to sayings, idioms, slang (even if it's "outdated"), learning how to conjugate verbs porperly and how to follow dialogue and kanji recognition... Admittedly I used the manga in conjunction with dictionaries and kanji practice...
Manga is a great literary inroad for those with little time and less money aiming to improve their literary and comprehension skills.
So, what do I reckon? It's not just the manga that are crap/good or whatever. It's the perspective of the reader.
And as for fart jokes etc... Seriously, if you find them funny, you do. If you don't you don't. Doesn't make them immoral or unsuitable for kids.
And frankly I am a religious reader of Calvin and Hobbes and Non-sequitor in english... |
