I have to say that I am greatly disappointed in all you Maritimers! How can you lay claim to all of these Eastern acts and leave out the granddaddy of them all... that Cape Breton legend, Stomp'in Tom!! You also left out Eata BigMeal (Rita McNeil for those who aren't up on your rather.. uh-hum... pachydermian coal mining songstresses!!!)
Shame, shame I say!
I think they should have a Canadian legends show where all of these young musicians can pay homage to the real greats like Steppenwolf, Helix, Corey Hart, Images in Vogue, Platinum Blonde, Parachute Club, The Spoons, and Men Without Hats. Wheel out Larry/Lawrence Gowan and Loverboy that's what I say!!!!!
Who else can we add to this potent list of Canadian greats? |

No, didn't forget. Didn't think that people would know them all, so I stuck to my guns (ie Hank). I wasn't sure how big following Stompin' Tom had outside the Maritimes. |

OK, I'm probably going to get kicked off the island for saying this, but I'm not a huge fan of Rita's.... ...*Capergirl dons her flame-retardant jacket and stoning-proof helmet*....

Anne Murray and Hank Snow? Good Gawd, how old are you people?!?!

Damn straight! Having grown up on the East Coast, I count these folks as my neighbours, as well as Natalie MacMaster and Ashley McIsaac. I've got a soft spot for these show-offs of the Celtic music scene. |
Natalie and Ashley are monster talents. Nonetheless, they can royally embarrass themselves and all of Cape Breton at times with their comments, particularly Ashley. *Capergirl does a quick check to make sure her flame retardant jacket is still on*

Bryan Adams, Trooper, Blue Rodeo, and Rush! (I know someone already mentioned Rush, but I had to say it again )

If you were legally TEFLing in Korea in 1997, then I'm younger than you. |

OT: I saw that you are an English lit. major and are taking your MA in TESOL. We have something besides blue noses in common. Where are you studying your MA? (You can PM me if you don't want to say here ) |

So I'm sittin' here, listenin' to Our Lady Peace, readin' Dave's, and then here's the Canuck thread. And on my calendar, lo and behold, I see that tomorrow is St. Jean Baptiste Day in Canada. Well, sorry about the ignorance but I have no idea how important this is to Canadians. But I thought I'd be the first to wish y'all a happy St. Jean Baptiste Day.
Happy St. Jean Baptiste Day! |

I love OLP.
Shoot! I was hoping the holiday wouldn't be some Quebec thing, but I had a feeling it might be. By the way, he's Saint John the Baptist. Maybe the Quebecois chop off a prophet's head to celebrate? Maybe everyone who celebrates it eats locusts and honey? Maybe just attend mass? Someone please tell me so I don't have to look it up myself.
Next year I'll teach my students about "a very important holiday to all Canadians--St. Jean Baptiste Day" |

hey stieiner ... did it for you ...
The 24th of June marks the Feast of St John the Baptist. This is known as St Jean Baptiste Day to French speaking cultures.
The date originally was the pagan celebration of the summer solstice. King Clovis of France christianized the event by making it a religious celebration of the birth of John the Baptist. John the Baptist is known as the Precursor of Christ, rebirth, and the light to the world, which explains the link to the solstice. Bonfires were lit to symbolize the light of the World.
This festival was particularly important for the catholics of Europe, especially those in France, where the king of France would light the traditional bonfire himself. As the French Culture moved to America, they brought the celebration with them. Naturally, in Quebec, where there is a large French speaking population the celebration took hold for many decades.
sounds like bonfires aplenty will be lit in quebec..... |

Are you crazy, man? The PC Police are gonna find this thread and drag you away....
Don't you know that most Canadian holidays aren't celebrated in Canada let alone in other parts of the world? Don't be so insensitive and ethnocentric...it's not all about Canada and the U.S. here.
Uh oh...I think I hear Waldorf..... |

Hee hee, be PC.
When I was in Japan, everyone insisted on wishing me a Merry Christmas. I thanked them for their sentiments, but if I had time/was possible, I'd point out I wasn't Christian. This caused great confusion. So I just began wishing everyone a "very merry emperor's birthday" in return. Yeah, A weird compromise, but at least it got them thinking.
PS Christmas Day - Dec 25.
Japanese Emperor Heisei (Akihito)'s Birthday - Dec. 23.
Wow, did divert this thread. |

Anyone in Toronto going to see the Stones benefit concert for SARS? 500,000+ people! I'll be there...only to see Rush and the Tea Party though...in particular Rush. Seeing one of the best drummers of all time (see my avatar) perform in front of so many people will be amazing! |
