My rent is 8000 pesos

WOW, so that means before your 50 percent housing bonus the rent for your place is 16,000.00? What do you pay for electricity there?

Guy, I am certain that he is going to love our little city. There is always something to do in a boomtown . I think he will work a month and then have a month off to spend all his dough. Is he going to bring family with him? It might be better to commute from the DF. The translators dont make much money compared to the workers or engineers and they pull down 35000 pesos monthly, 1 month on, one off = 70000 pesos. Black gold is alive and well in the south.

Hes a communications network engineer, or some fancy title like that. Thanks for telling me what hell be earning. Ill expect a bigger Xmas gift! Wink

Hes going alone...dont know his schedule.

Samantha, I have been here a few years and have a double Masters with pre-doc hours. The school pays the total rent of 8000. My house is in an exclusive area. There are rents of 20-30K on my street. In January I am going to move into a house with a 15000 rent. My power is also paid, but I can tell you that for my three bedroom house with three big mini-split A/C units it costs between 3-4K pesos every two months with subsidy. The bill without subsidy is almost double. It is like living in Cancun or Los Cabos, it is expensive to live in a boomtown.

CWC, thanks for what you said. I am completely unfamiliar with Mexico, so I don't know anything about Merida and its surrounding towns. I read online about the city, and it's not what I'm looking for.

When you say the jungle, how remote are you talking? Where exactly are the small towns you mentioned where one can live so cheaply? And could you tell me about your school? I'm starting from scratch and would appreciate as much as you would like to say.

Guy, thanks for the info. The bad stuff is buried under 12 entries. Did you see the entries about Sr. Lopez Tarso bringing the house down with his Quioxte show. Our owner brought the show to our auditorium for our students and staff.

CWC, enjoy it while you can.

My brother-in-law also works in the oil business, but for the Instituto Mexicano de Petroleo, rather than for PEMEX. He works on the scientific side. He's based in Villahermosa, but goes frequently to Cuidad Carmen to got out on the platforms for research. He says Mexico's gulf wells are going to dry up in less than 10 years. And predicts that Cuidad Carmen is going become a ghost town when that happens (like the silver mining towns in the mid north.) He's frantically studying for a PhD in Hydrology because he expects to have to change careers when PEMEX goes bust.

MELEE, thanks for the advice. That is a big controversy down here. Pemex is going to have to do something fast. They need to invest in technology that allows them to go back and get the last 25% of the oil in the capped wells. If you want to read a very interesting book read Twilight in the Desert. It deals with the Saudi, USA and Mexico production of crude. We are all going to be in trouble in a few decades. We need to think of something that goes way beyond solar, wind or even hydrogen to sustain our present lifestyles.

You hit on the key, those of us who have already made and continue to make lifestyle changes, won't have much trouble surviving without oil.

Thats right. Walking to school in the morning gives me a much needed chance to relax and enjoy the calm of the morning. One of the problems is that everything we touch is made out of oil or uses oil to produce it. Our food is planted, harvested and processed by machines that use oil. I lived on a small sailboat for six years with two small solar panels and a home-made wind generator. We CAN scale down, but there are very few people that think like you and I. Also what is going to happen when the society goes berserk due to a SUDDEN increase in the prices of EVERYTHING. Demand is increasing and supply is decreasing.

It amazes me that given the massive amounts of sunshine that Mexico receives annually, there aren't more people exploiting the possibilities of solar energy. (and I'm not just refering to solar panels. There are many different ways to utilize solar energy)
