I've only ever had to apply for one or two visas since I've mostly worked in Europe and I have a British passport. I did have to get a visa for the year I spent in the States and from memory the US embassy had my passport for about a month. I believe that I will need to give it up again for a month or two for my visa for Japan, I seem to remember the folks from AEON saying something to that effect but didn't pay a lot of attention since I figured I would just send off my Aussie passport and keep travelling on my British one in the meantime.
