gmat, yeah the air quality is probably not as bad as Shanghai, but in the south of China in the winter they don't need to heat their homes and thus have no coal fired plants, so I would say in winter the pollution here ranks right up with the best of them. The wind does carry it away, but not everyday. It also looks plain ugly here in the winter. Also I come from the West coast and Pacific Northwest and it was still really, really cold here. Of course this is probably a biased statement because I had to keep my windows open in the dead of winter, long story on that one.

As for the street food, they have little shops on the streets that sell some types of "street food", but it is not as good as other places. Near Da Wai Foreign Language University you can grab some street food, like buns, bings, and meat on a stick. Most of the city does not have vendors with carts selling food during the day, but there are a few places to go at night to find some street food. If you are looking for the good street food that cost 1-2 yuan at all times of the day, you are coming to the wrong city. I understand you would be upset, I love that food too and I was really disappointed when I got here.

David

There are plenty of little food stalls. Go to the beach and they make tasty fresh sea-food on a grill with great corn bread. The price? next to nothing!!!!!

Cool, that's fairly reassuring. If all else fails, I guess I could just get on a ferry to Yantai...
For the future, though my advice is to...
Boycott Pizza Hut! Support your local woman-with-a-wok!
I might just start a campaign to Save the Streetfood. If you can't get politically active about baozi and youtiao, what will motivate you? Write to your local faceless government officials today!

Travesty...you just haven't found the right places yet. I lived off great street food that costs 1-2 yuan at all times of the day there--the thing is, in this city, you need to look just a bit harder, especially under ground! Wink

If they are serving the baozi, dumplings, noodles, and other stuff that I can't find on the street elsewhere, like bread stuff, meat sticks, and bings then where is this place? I am not talking about a small restaurant either, but good foodstalls?

Ahh, Dalian. I was originally scheduled to go there . . . I had my plane ticket bought and everything!

Re: Southern China doesn't need to be heated. Hmm... Rolling Eyes Okay. I'll lock you in my living room for a week in Febuary.

Re: Boycott Pizza Hut in favor of Wok Woman. Hmm . . . can't. The Pizza Huts are the only places within 1000km that have real coffee. Oh, the food is pathetically overpriced and I never eat there, but actual caffine (has anyone noticed that Chinese tea really seems to be lacking in the caffine department) cannot be resisted. Sorry. Sad [/i]

Cathyvan,

This is not a site for recruiters to advertise. There is a pay site for that at Dave's ESL international jobs. If every recruiter abused this site like you are, this forum would lose its meaning for simple teachers like myself that come here to exchange information.

You know, I'd just swear that there are some entries missing from this thread. Could it be Amazing Evaporating Statements at work again?
