and of course, someone's bound to try to cook an egg in it, saying 'bir sey olmaz abi, bir sey olmaz', and after the The Thing That Can't Happen has actually happened, they shrug their shoulders and say, 'n'aapim? burasi Microwave.'

This is an old rumour. about a decade ago I corrected a student who insisted on saying Turkiye. He told me the law had been changed and Turkiye was now an old English word. He then whipped out one of those old newspaper dictionaries(sabah I think) and sure enough the translation of Turkiye was .... Turkiye. Of course the dictionary knows better than the teacher and he refused to use turkey... He still got penalised for it in the final exam Twisted Evil

Good. I thought that it was a silly rumour.

I had one student who insisted that 'thankyou' was an appropriate answer to the question 'How are you?', she wouldn't budge on this untill she failed a basic speaking test.
