I am currently living on campus now. I also heard that it was law to stay in the school after I tried (unsucessfully) to get an apartment elsewhere. I think the hidden reason was that the school spent a lot of money to refurbish the apartment.
Though I have a key to the front gate so I never worry about what time I come back in. Except for the few times when they changed the padlock without informing me. grrr... |

Hi, we are applying for a position in Wenzhou (Zhejiang province) at a government middle school. We have spoken to the FAO many times and asked if it’s possible to live off campus instead of on campus because on campus the accommodation has no kitchen.
He tells us that it’s impossible in Wenzhou because the local government has made it law; if you work for a government school in Wenzhou, you must live on campus.
Is he pulling our leg? Does anyone know the number of the foreign experts office in Wenzhou so I can check this piece of information. |
Is your school actually not in Wenzhou proper but in the Wenzhou District? I had a job offer at a school in Wenzhou District, in the middle of nowhere, about one hour from Wenzhou itself. The recruiter lied, the school lied, etc., but my taxi driver kept telling me that the school was at the end of the world. When I arrived, I found out that it was true. Indeed, the accomodation was horrific -- the worst that I have ever seen in China in all my years. One disgusting little room, filthy at best, Turkish toilet next to the washing machine was almost next to the bed. Every excuse possible was made : "the recruiter lied", "all of our other teachers loved this housing", etc. Well, guys, I wouldn't let them unload my luggage and headed right off to an emergency back-up job that I was able to quickly arrange.
I would encourage ANYONE thinking of working in Wenzhou to exercise an inordinate amount of caution and discretion. The District is quite large and rural and many recruiters and some schools will claim to be in the city...without actually lieing about it...because they are in some city or another...just not in Wenzhou...
And frankly, with all of those typhoons and the like, it's not the best choice that there is. I believe this explains in part why the salaries offered in Wenzhou tend to be higher than in the rest of the province.
There are still many, many jobs in Hangzhou, even at the last moment, and it's a great, enjoyable, quietly boisterous and thoroughly fun city.
Regards,

| What about those teachers who are married and have offspring? Should they also be subjected to these same rules? Should their inlaws be banned from coming to stay with them on campus? |

i have know of many a family who refused to resign with a school because they would not allow them to live off-post...
Never take this kind of directive..school do a poor job of looking out for FTs....and call this over seeing position required by law when they feell they need it to make the foreigner "under their thumb"..
My time...

We have a 3 month probationary period in the contract. I'm am not worried becuase I am a great teacher, and the students love me. But it's also a 3 month probation for them too. If I don't like it I can go without any reason or notice. So if there are any big thumbs...

I do trust the recruiter (Wow what a crazy thing to say hey?) And I have the website of the school, I can see that it's actually Wenzhou Middle School (without any numbers in it's name. I can only assume its close enough to the centre of the city. All the photos of the campus and the accommodation that have been supplied appear to be great. |

Brand new school, nice facilities, and withing 10 minutes by taxi of downtown. Nothing much in the neighborhood of the school, but it should not be too much of a problem. |

Yeah - that's what I thought really. In fact - I am looking forward to it, despite the warnings about living on campus. As many people say you should as say you shoudn't. |

Dont get me wrong..living on campus ..in the beginning may be the needed assurtiy of housing that some need...the problem comes when the authorities or as they are often called "the leaders of the school" try and contorl you every move with that weak kneed excuse that it is for your own protection...
the three month rules or clause is a smart move..I once had a three day clause where I could give three day notice to my employer and move on..used it with Raffels...when they didnt come through on their end of a marketing/promotion deal...
As to the location to the school...a lot depends on the availity of in expensive transpo..unless you will get a vehicle...I have hard 10 min. discription used in all location..what about busses or public transportation to and from the city center .. is there access to real taxis or the "dirty taxis" that pray on the country side school yards...location is everything when it come to being able to make a unpleasent living condition ..acceptable...check with some former teachers living on this campus..and remember that if you do for some reason need to call in the clause on your contract..living in a school accomidation leaves you with no place to look for another job if this wone goes south...
Also on a final note..depending onthe honesty of the institution where you will be employed ..they can use the housing to rake out additional money from your final/current paycheck..once I had a univerity make me wait one month for my pay after the program had closed..when I got paid they extracted 1500RMB..for my apartment and explaned that even though the pay was lat..the housing belonged to an on campus real estate management company who had nothing to do with the institution I worked for...so of cource there was nothing the offending school could do..except extract the money ....along with my ire... |
