Dialup maxes out at 5K/s...I'm on the lowest speed DSL connection there is in Mexico. Very expensive here.
However, hauling my laptop to school and picking up the free wifi spot there yields up to 200K/s. |

Can someone explain this torrent business to me like I'm a 10-year-old?
Could I watch NBA? |

I will try to explain, but know that I would be contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
What we are talking about are peer-to-peer networks...basically, someone uploads a small file that lets everyone else know where to find them. enough people get on, and everyone is sharing files...usually movies, tv shows, games, porn, and yes, NBA games.
First, you need to get the program that connects you to everyone else. One I'll suggest is Azureus. Get it here at http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
Make sure to read all the FAQs about Azureus on that site and google other FAQs or forums for more help.
Azureus doesn't directly download the NBA game you want. What you have to do is search for a torrent file...the little file that tells everyone where to find everyone else. There are numerous sites around that list torrent files and allow you to download them, which should open up the Azureus download and eventually get you the show you want. go check out...
http://www.torrentspy.com/ This is one of the best sites you'll find. Just for fun, try keying in NBA Pistons into the search box and see how many torrents show up. For sports, they are often names nicely enough so you can figure out which game it is.
Once you have Azureus downloaded and installed (it may need to be updated or you may have to do some tweaking), you can go to the torrentspy site, click on the game you'd search for (or any game) and then click on Download Torrent. On other sites or through a google search, clicking on the name of the torrent file is usually enough to start a download.
This should automatically open Azureus. The first time you try, you will probably have to select a program from a list to associate with a torrent file. Pick Azureus.
Right away, Azureus starts to connect to other people who have the whole game or pieces of the game to share with you. you'll see that you are downloading and uploading at the same time, as you gradually get 10%, then 50%, then 100% of the game. This is the essence of P2P netoworks...the sharing.
Try all of that then come back here and we'll see how you did. PM me if you'd like some more help, or PM Gordon...he's a pro at it now. |

Google is your friend. You should be able to follow this.
I think http://www.mininova.org/ is the best site going. However, there are many private trackers that are much better and faster, however you have to keep a decent ratio. |

| I use Demonoid, its a private tracker. They have currently reopened registrations so if you are quick you can get an account. I recommend them because you can ALWAYS find what you are looking for on Demonoid and most files are well seeded which means fast downloads. You do have to do a lot of uploading though to get your rating above 1 otherwise they ban you (they give you a lot of time to do it though). In terms of public sites I use NewNova predominantly but I am currently downloading the entire series of Full Metal Alchemist from TorrentSpy. |

Hi Guy,
Thanks so much for that most excellent explanation. Don't have the time now to try it what with moving house and renovating, but I am definitely on that and will let you know how it works for me. Can't wait!
Enjoy,

I would suggest going with azureus and not bittorrent. Bittorrent is fine BUT - a number of the closed communities have recently banned it. More and more sites are doing so.
Use download azureus and change the port number. I think I use 49152.
minivova.org is good. But sites such as uknova.com and bitmetv.org are much better! Because they are membership based there is a lot more to download!! But mininova is a good beginning place.
Just got optic fibre. Loving the increased speeds! |
