This is funny funny funny to me
I do speak up and I do choose who I will work for.
Thus the questions regarding JAPAN.
25-30 hours...really...i don't think so. MOST JOBS advertised
18-24.
Only a fool would accept more without financial compensation.
I know Japan is not north america...and I am not an ambassador.
but thanks anyone..hahaha
I just stated IDEAL hours would be around 12-18. I work at least
22...sometimes I get lucky and get 18. But I like to keep my
material fresh..and f--u...i do recycle my material but it is
not so easy as I am teaching different levels.
I come from the real work of work..not mummy and daddys house out
into the tefl world or being an AMBASSADOR TO MY COUNTRY.
In the business world YOU CHOOSE YOUR JOB, YOUR SALARY, ETC...
and YOU MAKE THE MOVES...
The telf world is full of enough badgering blathering british teachers
who talk about following the RULES...it is a no wonder all these
TEFL companies make it RICH and exploit the hell outta people.
WHY DON'T YOU TAKE A STAND FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE. AND SAY
HEY>>> I AM NOT A MACHINE>>>MY BUTT HURTS>>>I WANT DECENT
WORKING CONDITIONS ETC... but I guess that would go against
the EMPIRE long since fallen.
cheerrrrrioooo...lets find more interesting topics.
No I will not go to Japan based on the info gained by the fine
teachers on this board. I will keep looking and I WILL BE HAPPY DAMM_IT! |

Doubleagent (meaning: one who goes both ways?)
Now can you see? There are a lot of PET gaijin teachers here working loooooong hours for loooooooowwww teeny weeny wages. Why? Is it because they haven't been anywhere else teaching to compare? Are they all escaping Korea? Is it to go window shopping? Out of some bizarre form of 'respect' for the local culture? The J-babe myth? Who knows. But I do know that really good jobs are few and far between and it really sucks when a spouse of a Canadian embassy worker takes it illegally.
But you flamed me on that thread last week. Seems that you, doubleagent, have "a lot of free time on your hands." (Certainly more than me 'cause I'm in J-land and you are stuck in the Middle East )

If you live in a foreign country, yes you are. Obviously, you are a poor one.

No one is arguing that. I'm just telling you that choosing your salary (ie, finding or negotiating for a higher one than baseline standards) is pretty tough here. Deal with it or don't come.

If this was a stab at me, you are barking up the wrong tree. I'm not British. But you seem to have something against them. Stay away from the UK, Mr. Ambassador.

Watch your potty mouth. And, I'm sooooo sorry that you have different levels to teach. Who doesn't? All of my lessons are suited for any level. And I teach super-basic beginners to near fluent speakers.

Again, is this meant to be some sort of crack at me? I can't even see the relevance of it. Besides, I've been working for 30 years and never once sponged off my family. Paid my way my whole life.

To be honest, I am not a machine; I teach great lessons and never serve as a human tape recorder, and I get along great with my Japanese co-workers and boss. As for my butt hurting, I presume that means some sort of remark about sitting at a desk for long hours. Well, yes, that does happen, but I figure I spend enough time teaching on my feet to warrant it. Decent working conditions? I am careful enough to pick what I want, too, and since I am in a foreign land with little legal recourse to make changes (weak union, y'see), I compromise a bit when I feel it is necessary. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. But I see you don't believe that, in Japan anyway.
And, you might want to give up on the cracks against the British Empire. You are becoming really well-liked because of them.

Double Agent,
I've worked as an TESOL teacher for the past 10 years, and full time at an International school and I worked 5 and a half hour days with a one hour lunch break and two 15 minute breaks each day. That's 35 hours a week and paid prep at 10 hours a month. I was there from 8 am every morning to prep, and hung out after class finished at 3:30, shared troubles and glory with my fellow teachers, helped shovel out the book room when it got crazy and made a lot of original material.
That's what it takes.
My brother was working in public high schools. He had one or two spare blocks a day, but usually clocked about 25 contact hours. He was teaching high school English. His day usually didn't end until 5 or 5:30.
Where the heck did you get this 18 hours contact time thing? International English schools, in the UK, in the US or Canada, have about the same schedule for their teachers - 30-35 hours a week.
Here in Japan, my Japanese coworkers do about 20 hours contact time with their students. I figure it's actually less than teachers in my home country.
Where the heck do you work?! What are you talking about?! It doesn't make sense. |

Jeez, double agent--you don't like the Canadians, you don't like the British, the experienced Japan hands are all wankers--is there anyone that you haven't made sweeping generalizations about?
On the General Discussion board there's a string about the "Newbie Disease." I think you've got a bad case of the "Oldtimer's Disease." You've obviously been in ESL for way too long. |

jobs in japan are slavish. I said TEFL JOBS elsewhere are fewer hours.
I am not burnt out, but I am tired of inexperieced TEFL'ers telling
me how INNOCORRECT I am in my WANTS and NEEDs.

Double Agent
You are not "INNOCORRECT" in your "WANTS and NEEDs". They are personal. You can want whatever you want!
It is true--"jobs in japan are slavish" if you are unqualified and lack relevant experience. Since the beginning you have made no effort to express exactly what kind of position you are looking for, except for number of teaching hours, it is not surprising that you have this impression.
How are things in Vietnam by the way? Tons of money and only 12 contact hours a week? |

Well, I have ten years of experience in Japan and Europe. And I can spell, too. |
