| I got a pine cone from a first or second grade elementary student in the playground at their school (I only got o that school about twice a year). She was very earnest when she told me not to eat it. |

I always get em. This year one of my young students (a 15 year old) gave me a teddy bear (for my child) and a cup of coffee for me. Ain't that nice?!
I also got postcards, bookmarks, key chains from my adult students.
I don't like receiving gifts, to be honest. It always makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. |

Being so distant from family, all we're exchanging this year are pictures across MSN. Have most family in Ottawa, some in Sudbury (near Santa) and a stepsister in Calgary. Here's what she sends me...

Getting a laugh for Christmas beats spending hours at the return counter with gawdawful ties... |

Can't agree more! I never know what to give. What I do know is that a lot of what I give is probably regifted.
Though I did get something nice this year: THE FAMILY GUY latest DVD. |

Regifted. I like it. The latest addition to English Follies: A Dictionary for Everyday Use.
Could I say 'regiftage'? |

You probably could.
I wish I could take credit for the word, but it was first coined on Seinfeld. |

and I was going to say that you are quite the gifted one. Turns out you are merely 'regifted'.

Good pun! old chap. These days it seems that there is a RE before most things I say or do. Ain't got much originality left. |

the best was from a former student. i had taught him at a private school when he was 11, and since he was so bright, eager to learn, and always lurking around the FA office, i gave him lots of attention and extra help. his parents were very appreciative, and took me out to posh dinners often.
a couple of years later, i returned to the same city but a different school. few foreigners in the city, so word travels fast... imagine my surprise when, on christmas eve, i opened the door to find this boy, barely recognizable as he had grown about a foot and thinned out a lot, panting from having lugged two 40-can cases of limited-edition qingdao beer up the 6 flights of stairs to my apartment!
i must have made just the right kind of impression on his parents. |
