i hope someone can offer some sound advice. i am an american male who is tired of america. for years i have heard it is possible to make a living teaching english in prague. i now am seriously considering coing so.
i have no tefl certificate, but i do possess a bachelors degree in english and a law degree (Juris Doctor) from american universities. i also have a year of teaching experience at an american college.

my question, then, is: would it be possible to earn enough to stay alive by teaching in prague? what would a typical lifestyle be like for someone in that position? are the teaching positions exploitative or fair to the teachers?

i am at the end of my rope: america, for me, is nothing but alienation. so really, if you can offer any suggestions, that would be a great relief.

Working sucks. All jobs suck. The only reason we work is because we have to, or else we'll end up on the street pissing ourlselves like Mr. Hutton. If I wasn't working, I'd probably live in my parents' basement, which isn't as bad as it sounds but I'm sure there's something about it I haven't thought of that sucks.

Some jobs suck more than this one. Some jobs suck less than this one. Every job, no matter how good it looks from this side of the fence, has something that sucks about it, something you couldn't imagine until you started doing that job and discovered that it sucked.

You just find a way to live with it and move on. I'm not my job. I just get money from my job. I try to do better at my job because it makes it seem like it sucks less.

It could be worse. I could be in Taiwan. According to ghost, Taiwan sucks.

OFF THE NET:

Ok, you are most likely saying to yourself, "What a whining imbecile. Big deal; what is he trying to prove?" Well, nothing, really. I just wanted to bitch a little bit, and let the masses know how much life really does suck. Try to wake up the ignorant and/or blind and/or braindead optimists (I hear rumors that some of these still exist; it's sad, really). Life is not a fun experience, and should be avoided if at all possible. However, if you are reading this, you are most likely already alive, and so Life is the lesser of two evils in that case. My only suggestion for dealing with Life is to go completely crazy every now and then, whether you need to or not. This helps immensely, and can prevent a complete, total, and permanent loss of sanity at a later date. Other than that, just shut up and deal with it... And, always know that no matter how bad your life is, at least you aren't me...

Life doesn't suck. People suck, but life doesn't. Try doing some magic mushrooms and listening to Jim Noir, then you'll find some optimism. Posting pointless links on message boards will make it all seem much more pointless.

I am prepared to compromise with the dreaded Baba - I'll meet her 1/2 way down the neo-hippy trail... Here is my offering: (off the bone/net...)

Life - by AJ (based on a theme by Hep/Jhayden)
Life sucks
Sewer rats.
Big ones,
Wet ones,
Lithe ones,
Gaudy ones.
Life sucks
Sewer rats...
This poem brings up an important notion, and one of the major foundations of my philosophy: sewer rats. What exactly are sewer rats? What is their cosmic significance? And, why does life choose to suck them?

Like every living object, a definition which just about stretches to include TEFLers, it's quite possible that sewer rats have no significance whatsoever ...

They exist only because conditions allow them to ...

But Bah-Bah Alex would have us not discuss ideas that lead to a less than postive outlook on life .. or would allow us such providing we construct a point to our own life; a point we must then forget is fabricated ...

And here I was thinking I would get slammed for my limited vocabulary because of using 'sucks' so many times in one post.

Here are some things that don't suck:

snow
holding more than one baby animal in one hand
hot showers
red flavor that is cherry or raspberry (though it sucks when it's strawberry)
people who snort when they laugh
fresh fruit juice
magic mushrooms (unless they're like the ones that landed me in the hospital several years back-- that sucked)
tractors
new stationary
my mom's pickles, especailly the pickled onions

OK. I'll try and explain

First I'll use Jerzy Grotowski to set the scene:

The rhythm of life in modern civilization is characterized by pace, tension, a feeling of doom, the wish to hide our personal motives and the assumption of a variety of roles and masks in life (different ones with our family, at work, amongst friends or in community life, etc.-). We like to be "scientific", by which we mean discursive and cerebral, since this attitude is dictated by the course of civilization. But we also want to pay tribute to our biological selves, to what we might call physiological pleasures. We do not want to be restricted in this sphere. Therefore we play a double game of intellect and instinct, thought and emotion; we try to divide ourselves artificially into body and soul. When we try to liberate ourselves from it all we start to shout and stamp, we convulse to the rhythm of music. In our search for liberation we reach biological chaos. We suffer most from a lack of totality, throwing ourselves away, squandering ourselves.

Then, we have to deal with oneness:

According to popular belief Oneness is a long term goal. Some people have a vested interest in spreading a lot of such popular beliefs; among them in the forefront are bosses of mystery schools whose main concern is in keeping a lot of paying students or a lot of worshippers! Contrary to this generally accepted popular belief Oneness should be a basis of metaphysical advancement and not its long term goal. Furthermore, it can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. As is the case with many other metaphysical practices, it is so easy that it takes some people decades to learn it. That's because most people think that everything needs to be complicated to be effective. To achieve this type consciousness in a relatively short period of time, all it takes is the right advice in the right surrounding, preferably with others who have the same goal in mind.

Now you are probably thinking that I am going to suggest group sex - no way - that would get the attention of u know who ...

So what we need is advice/surroundings/others/same mind, etc. Where on earth do u find all that in ONE shot?

My answer is THIS: If u are STRAIGHTt become GAY - and if u are GAY become STRAIGHT!

Then, go and watch Liverpool and sing along Laughing
