MOD EDIT To say that language variation is an artificial barrier, to label the Catalanes as "monkeys," and to recommend that they not learn their native language demonstrates this. I agree to disagree but I will not remain silent
as others hastly spew forth such statements as described above.
As teachers of English (perhaps the fasting growing linguaphage
today) we may be perceived as cultural ambassadors. Our "actions and
statements" will be judged and generalizations will be made about us. MOD EDIT on the part of our fellow teachers should not go uncontested or we may all be labled as linguistic imperialists. Many are aware of and resent the global power, both economicaly, militarily, and of course linguistically, of the British and American nations (for justifiable reasons, no doubt), therefore, the least we can do is show an ounce of humility. We should be concious of the struggles of dominated, oppressed, and so called minority peoples of the past and present (often at the hands of the governments of our respective nations) and we should support their human right to speak and study in their native language. |
