I'm doing a course with a lad who spent several years in Oman (outside of Muscat) and gather that while Oman has it's charms, a swinging nightlife ain't among them.

Outside Muscat, I agree, there's notalot; in Muscat, there's loads to do - from joining the Caledonian Society to Bridge to Sailing to Hash House Silliness to finding the latest bopping bar in whichever Hotel happens to be the trendiest this month. Depends how old you are, how sensible you are, and how close to the action you live. (It's like a village compared to Dubai, admittedly, but in Dubai they don't have "nature").

All this debate and still no solutions. Meeting people online with social purposes can seem a little vile, but may be an option. Keep in mind the male:female ratio, as well as the age and marital status of most Gulf expats. The odds are simply evil. Truth is, many of the remaining foreign ladies are being snatched up (if temporarily) by dishdasha'ed warriors of the sands carrying gold and frankincense and myrrh in luxury SUVs. The others are probably watching telly. One way to connect with people is by using the search engine on personal spaces offered by MSN (http://spaces.msn.com/) and Yahoo (http://360.yahoo.com). Enter Oman in the Place of Residence field and click Go. Also check out www.omanforum.com. Good luck.

Kuberkat,

I may be a wrong here, but it sounds to me that you may be doing what I and my fellow teachers are doing.

That is filling in time with no students, no lessons, having to be in our office from 8.00 am to 4:30 pm. I never knew there were so many websites out there!!!

Killing time??? Oh yes,we know all about that!!!!

Got me there, Duffy.

On a serious note, though, if seriously off-topic, I am rather concerned. We are in our third week of the void and all staff have been refused access to the textbooks they will be teaching next semester. It's as if the only work-related thing worth doing has been torn away from us. What is this? Zen Boot Camp? Why are they paying us to do nothing for a month if we could be sparing ourselves back-to-school chaos and preparing some great stuff for new students?

Funny you should say that!! I am going to raise the subject with my HOD before the weekend.

A while ago there were some "New Headway" books circulating around here, then "Tapestry". Don't know if either will be adopted, nor if the "Sohar Model", which I thought was excellent will be adopted.

Could somebody adopt me!!!! I eat a lot, sleep a lot and like to be cuddled - err - hang on, I think our feline friends have cornered that market!! Sad Sad

Ah well, back to the grindstone (for that read book III in the "Rameses" series!!

Duffy Laughing Laughing

Oh by the way, another contentious issue, have you received your contract for next year yet??? Question Question

I do have a terrible predilection for felines, unfortunately. Too bad keeping one would involve two months of surrogate parenting annually. I could never do that.

As to being adopted, looks like you may even be returning to the thread topic here.

Are you at a Ministry College, Duff? May I ask which one? Where I am, we mainly teach English majors, so I've heard I'll teach Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Have managed to snatch the books from a colleague who had spare copies of some, fortunately.

We haven't been given contracts, except for a few "civil service": employees. There has been a circular saying that special contracts are still in preparation- let's hope no evils are being cooked up there...
