You sorry sods are way too easy to flame.

The three of you launched an attack and again you've all failed miserably.

Get over it.

I pronouce it the Polish way as well, but I spell it correctly.

By the way where I'm from singling out nationalities is seen as being in bad taste.

I've heard brand new Brits pronounce it Crakow as well.

Yes, we all pronouce it Crakow until we realize that it's Krakw. Rolling Eyes Yet as an English teacher you should know that's it's still spelled "Cracow." (yawn)

The difference is in the States we don't flip out if someone pronounces something a little funny. Because we don't judge people on their use of English.

Remember we kicked King George out because we continued Cromwell's quest for liberty over tyranny.

(In fact Norman Davies calls the American Revolution part 2 of the English Revolution.)

With that the US became a much more egalitarian society than that of Great Britain.

So as far as offending the people of Mirpur. Twisted Evil

Rolling Eyes

First of all, I was talking about how it's spelled, not how it's pronounced.

Second of all, I don't think having a CELTA gives someone the right to go around correcting people, especially when their English is correct already.

Maybe instead of trying to stroke your egos, you guys should try reading some history books ocassionally so you'll know how to spell correctly, in English, instead of learning how to spell by reading maps at the youth hostel. Very Happy

Nice point gregoryfromcali - and the English language is a wonderful flexible thing in all it's forms - I agree with you about correcting. Unless the mistake is blatant, but I've got quite a lot more than just a Celta and have never, God forbid, stayed in a youth or any other type of hostel. And I would avoid backpackers. I always pretend I'm Polish and don't speak their language if they approach me. Very Happy And I'm not totally naive about Polish History Cool

You might like to buy a copy of ''The Times' Style Guide', available at most good bookshops. They make it clear - it's Krakow. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Then don't.

Actually WE kicked King George out. Washington, Franklin and all the Founding Fathers were British radicals. We simply seeded a new, more democratic country in one of our many colonies. The project has worked out rather well. Cool The other ex colonies are coming along nicely too, with a few notable exceptions.

And as for Cromwell, he ccould teach the worst dictators in the world a thing or two about tyranny. Ask the Irish Twisted Evil

I would however question whether the US is more egalitarian than the UK. There doesn't seem to be much in it, but if all the stuff on TV about ghettos, urban squalor, wetbacks, trailers, access to healthcare etc is true (never been there so I can only go by what I see - I rather hope the reality is better) then I suspect we have a slight advantage. Twisted Evil

And I agree fully. It's Krakow.

Well mate, even if you have a DELTA, a CELTA, a doctorate, and fought in the Battle of the Somme, I would still say it's rude.

By the way even Jagiellonian is on my side on this one. http://www.oa.uj.edu.pl/

Nobody says Warszawa or Praha unless they're speaking in the appropriate language. But convention dicatates that Crakow is quite simply bad taste. It is Krakw. My home town (not Bradford - the real one) is called Mirpur. Heaven help any European or American who calls it 'Meerapoor'. That is just old fashioned, and again Bad Taste.

When in ROME....

I say and write WARSZAWA because I speak Polish and I prefer it.

BRING IT ON CALIFORNIA BOY! Razz
