Well done William Wallace!

As a former Prime Minister of Australia said when he was cussing (about) a US President at the time, "swearing in Welsh is so much more satisfying!"

In Guanghou in 1996 I can remember the uni paying about 3,500 tops plus the usual benefits & allowances. Part-time work was generally 100 per hour. I seem to recall that expenses were much lower then, too -- the money went a lot further it seems.

My first job in Dalian I was getting 7,000 for 27 hours a week at Searich in 2001. Soon it became 8500. In Qingdao in 2002 I was getting 6000 plus apt for 20 hours.

In 2003 I was in Zhuhai making 4000 for twenty hours and no apt. In 2004 in Shenzhen that quickly became 9500 no apt for 20 hours.

Now in Shenzhen I just freelance companies, hotels, and privates and make almost 25000 for about 30 hours a week. Lots of hustling around town, lots of taxis, but some people pay 200 an hour for business English and companies pay around 450 an hour.

Not too shabby, but I have to admit that I was happiest in Zhuhai making something close to peanuts.

There's a lot more than that. Pretty much everyone over at ACES is working for 2500. I've also been in contact with a guy who's coming over here to volunteer with a group of 10 others. What I really couldn't believe is that no matter how I tried to tell him he was being scammed, and how, (based on his own words), they've lied right to his face, he 's still coming over with that same group. Drove me absolutely nuts.

No, they're Danish, and they were told that you can only get paid if you speak Chinese as well as English. So this guy was hoping that maybe after a year his Chinese would be good enough that he'd be able to get paid for teaching. Sad

Since missionaries have been mentioned - yes, this is a worrying current not just because they might undermine the remunerations packages to which FTs are by virtue of the law entitled; they also have sinister agendas that are not necesssarily in everybody's view when they first show up.
Even PRIVATE K 12 institutions resort to employing missionary teachers.

wow a law - when was it passed - are our wage levels also written into the FT statutes Laughing

Actually I do suspect there is a real law about the activities of Missionaries.
