Region specific? That would be an understatement. I get Sanuki udon out my yin yang. The Japanese food is good, I don't want to give a different impresssion. However, this is the least int'l place I have ever been to (in almost 50 countries) and I have lived here going on 4 years.
The city is not exactly the sticks, it has over 300,000 people, but the number of non-Japanese restaurants in the city are less than 10, I'd guess. I also am from Vancouver so I know what you mean. |

I didn't realize until I got to Japan that I moved to an area known for its basashi -- that's horse sashimi (raw meat) for those of you who haven't heard of it before. Just like any sashimi, a bit o' shoyu and wasabi -- and it's really quite nice! I've taken quite a liking to it. Oishii!!! |
You must live in Kumamoto! I also like Basashi! And to those who disagree about Koreans liking dog meat, need to go back there. Specially the emotional guy with a korean wife. I had Korean colleagues who often ate dog meat and they were in their 20s!!!!! |

Been in Japan more than 6 years now and I can't say that the food is that impressive. Japanese food is healthy and does have a lot of variety but mostly it is very bland (why don;t they use more sauces?). Korean food has much more taste.
As for foreign foods in Japan, I can't say I appreciate how they mangle up western food (seaweed on pizza etc etc) and the Chinese food here is very bland too. Give me Korean (or even better, Thai or Indian) any day... |

I love the food here in Kansai, though I haven't made it up to Tokyo yet. Everyone tells me the okonomiyaki in Tokyo is a bit bland in comparison. The craziest two things I've tried have been the horse sashimi, and fuguzushi (blowfish sushi) in Shimonoseki. Both were pretty good considering my apprehension!
I really miss a few things from Texas: Mongolian BBQ, authentic Tex-Mex and pizza. I know, Texas isn't known for pizza, but it sure beats the dried squid and chocalate syrup I've seen on it here! |

| I have heard their main meat dish is shabu, shabu. Anyone tried it. If so I am wondering how it compares to Korean So Kalb, or Sam Ge Tongue or kalbi Tongue say. |

I've tried Shabu-shabu and So Kalb both are good. I liked So Kalb slightly better, because it is more spicy. Don't get me wrong, Korean food is okay, except for dog. When I lived there, I just got tired of Kimcehee and every meal being so spicey.
Oh yea. I had sushi in Korea. They served it with tomato sauce, nato sauce and soy sauce.
I prefer Sukiyaki or Nabe over any Korean dish. |
