I've worked 16 months in China and am now considering another tour of duty.

tedkarma, the Jobs in general are booming or the TESL work?

And how easy would it be for an FT working in BKK to escape on weekends to one of the many tropical paradises found south of the Capital? Doable?
Financially viable?

Thanks

Surfer,

I was in Phuket for over a year and made 35,000 baht a month, I had experience but two of the other teachers that were hired did not and they made the same amount. There are many opportunities in Phuket to teach do not give up the dream.

The best way to get a job in Phuket is to be there. Go out and meet some other people, one of them is bound to be a teacher. Word of mouth will get you a job, in other words network. Your chances are 10 times greater that they will hire you if you are already in Phuket .

You do know that surfing in Phuket is seasonal? Only good surfing about 3-4 months of the year. I would try Kata but there are many other places to go as well.

The TEFL/TESL job market is booming in BKK - I don't pay much attention to other types of jobs.

Round trip BKK to HKT - on 1-2-Go is usually B3400.

I've lived in Pattaya for many years and Bangkok and been to most places around Thailand. I now prefer to live in Bangkok and when I get a need for ocean, I just catch a bus down to Pattaya or to Hua Hin for the weekend. Its no big deal and only 2 hours away (depending on traffic). There is also Koh samet, bit further away, but doable for a weekend away.
I think you have more options in Bangkok, not just for work, but for socializing and things to do, other than bars. You can go ice skating, bowling, museums, great spas, movies, shopping til you drop and lots of great night spots. Theres also temples and buddist retreats if you really want to get away from it all.
Hope it helps
Cheers
