It is easy to save money. I doubt many people need to read threads on it.

However, do you really want to stay at home almost every night making spaghetti? This is the real question. And it should be a serious consideration for those thinking of teaching in Japan.

Spent 800 yen on a ingredients then cook up a big vat of curry that`ll last you about three days. Then spend the other four eating out.

Personally, I`m not convinced about Tokyo being so expensive. Its certainly not more expensive than London. Rent I do concede, is high. But convenience store beer costs the same as anywhere else, chain restaurants cost the same. I went to a little izakaya down the road a couple of weeks ago and I dropped almost 5000 on two beers and a couple of bowls of rice topped with some kind of gunk. I`ll be sticking to Dennys, Gusto and Izakayas with picture menus in future.

Or just go to Matsuya for three days and spend 250 yen a day on curry rice with salad and miso soup. Get it cooked for you and save 50 yen + the electricity, and the washing up.

Yeah, any time someone gives you a plate of nuts or eda mame (sukidashi) you will almost always have to pay extra. It took me a few weeks in Japan to figure out why I got charged for three beers when I only drank two.

Apparently you can refuse the sukidashi but only if are willing to make a complete social paraiah of yourself.

In the US they have this BS thing where you have to pay extra every time you order a beer (tipping). It took me a while to figure out why the bar tender gave me evil looks after paying the price of one beer every time I bought one beer.

Apparently you can refuse to tip but only if are willing to make a complete social paraiah of yourself.

Dear Valillo,

I have just been steered towards some of your posts. I am the Japan recruiter for Saxoncourt, and they do not seem to match any of the candidates we have waiting to go to Japan in Summer or September. Please get in touch with me so we can clear up any misunderstandings. As I said, at present I do not have anyone that matches you due to start work in Japan via us. Please get in contact so that we can sort this out.

Best wishes,

Simon

Simon Saxoncourt recruiter, does your company enroll teachers in the Japanese medical insurance system as legally required? Looking at your site, it's clear that you don't.

Does Saxoncourt properly insure you, but not it's teachers?

How do you sleep at night?

Deducted at source: Income Tax (about 6%), Rent (up to 78,000 yen), medical insurance (about 6,600 yen)

Insurance policy covers all medical costs, including emergency dental treatment, operations, emergency repatriation, etc. It does not, however, cover any pre-existing conditions
