The victims I read about woke up in a door way in SultanAhmet.

I'll out in Sultan Ahmet tomorrow night, I'd best be carefull. Although the only organ I've got that functions porperly is a Fender Rhodes.
I once asked the otehr half what the emergency number in Turkey was, she said not to bother.
Anyhow, didn't take long for that thread to be locked, * sigh *, Saloma I remember that argument. I was never contacted by any moderator though, 31 was banned, then again as Mark Lloyd. I wonder if he's back in our midst again. There's a few charcters here that are making me suspicious.

I suspect the bar scam happens to men. What kinds of scams have the women posters gotten suckered into?

I got the "you gave me only so much, you made a mistake" as I walk away from a taxi scam. It really ticked me off, as I had been congratulating myself on knowing Istanbul. This was several years ago and perhaps it doesn't happen so much with the new money. however, my daughter experience a similar scam in the US, so it's not only here.

There's conmen everywhere, but the cultures differ Confused

I don't think this counts as a scam, but when I first came here almost everyone I knew was really hyped out about taxi cab drivers kidnapping people. no one would I knew would let me near a cab unless they had written down the number and all that (in fairness, this could also have been just cuz I was so hopelessly drunk, young, and naive, no one could believe I had actually found the right airplane to come here in the first place...) But appaerntly it was a real problem, at one time, taxi kidnappings.
And just the other day I had a spooky driver tell me how rich I must be, you know, america has gold leaves on the trees, not to mention the gold bricks on the sidewalks...

I have heard first hand stories of cops stopping obviously foreign looking women with their obviously Turkish looking boyfriends. They take the boyfriend aside and give him a hard time, saying things like "we'll have to check to see if she's a prostitute" until boyfriend coughs up some money.

Happened to a Brit teacher and a woman from Sweden. But this was many years ago. I think the cops have cleaned up somewhat, haven't they?

A teacher I once worked with was followed home by a cop on a few occasions. He blagged himself into her house at 2 oclock in the morning demanding cups of tea and stuff. In the end we had to report it as it was happening on a regular basis. It resulted in the teacher going down the copshop and going through the a photo id thing. she picked him out, he was then hauled in front of her and told to apologise- that was the end of the matter.

Even further back in time I heard about a teacher who took a taxi then the taxi driver drove her out of the city, raped her and left her in the middle of nowhere.

But both these stories did happen a while back.

Conundrum - Sense of humour failure or deficiency Question

The 'I don't know when to stop being a disciplinarian teacher' nature of the post would suggest 'failure' ... but this ...

.. would suggest 'deficiency' ... actually regarding the dialogue as comedy Laughing

There was a foreign teacher killed out at Koc Univ some years ago. This stuff happens, but I think the significant thing is that it doesn't happen all that much. And yes, I think the cops are not as dirty as they used to be. As whether foreign women are considered prostitutes or not, I think that is happening less too, even though I live in an area of brothels. I don''t get asked as often if I'm Russian, so that's a good sign Twisted Evil
