In May and June I will be making 875 RMB per hour!!! (Senior students graduate!) Very Happy (I also have 6.5 days off per week... so it isnt like I can rake in the cash at this rate Crying or Very sad)

(But this its after a semester and a half of teaching 120 students thesis writing.... the seniors will graduate and my teaching load will decrease substantially!)

To be more realistic...

Last semester I got 109 per hour.
The first half of the semester I get between 175 and 218 per hour.

This is just considering the teaching hours. Writing class last semester took an insane amount of time. I was probably making closer to 40 RMB per hour with how much extra effort I had to put into grading writing.

Here in Beijing the range feels like 100-150 for basic tutoring and contracted teaching. It can get a lot higher, of course, for corporate work or teachers with good contacts and reputations.
A teacher I know here asked if I thought 120 was decent money for an hour of one-on-one tutoring. I answered that I'd probably do it for that, if it was convenient. It's less than I make now though at my regular job.

I'm in my forth city in two years and the cost of living varies drastically in China . Beijing is the most expensive . When you move west prices come down . So you must factor this in

I earn 120 for a 45 minute class with high school students and 150 for adult classes. If I have to travel more than 30 minutes 200 an hour Private classes 200 an hour and they come to my home.

"paid him so royally"

C'mon Roger, royally?

I make more than he does and I don't live "royally".

Your disdain for this profession and your dismal appraisal of our worth has grown ever so tired.

Take a break, please.

And what is it, PRince Andrew of Canton, that makes you believe I should give you a "break"? Do you need one? Then you will be free to take one - without Roger's help!

Meanwhile, it's one thing making money; it's quite another actually getting satisfaction performing one's job.
I have the distinct impression the OP didn't do too well in the latter department while making that amount of money.
And he obviously got fired. WHy?

My pay is slightly less but I have more hours, prep time is often minimal and I live minutes away from the school.
So I guess I am almost da man.

Great way to ruin a potentially great thread guys. I am trying to help out foreign teachers and myself, of course.

Why?

I am sick of wasting my time in showing up for an interview just to have the person (with a straight face) tell me that 60 min classes are paid at 80 RMB.

I have not said anything about WHY I left my job nor should I. For you to assume something and then to actually write it down in the thread only dilutes the good posts on here from people who try and contribute to the ORIGINAL TOPIC.

To the rest of you: have fun earning 80 RMB a day or entering a program that makes you pay to enter then teach.

I teach between 700 and 800 45-minute "hours" a year. If I work out the rate based on all salary and allowances I get (including housing allowance and airfare), it comes to somewhere a little over 150 per 45 minutes, which is 200 per 60 minutes. When my school needs a part-timer, they offer 100 per 45 minutes. As far as I know, the reason for the huge discrepancy is that they don't actually realise what it costs them to employ me. Nobody really seems to analyse the cost of anything in China, come to think of it.

Airfare is not payment for work performed. It is reimbursement for expenses incurred PRIOR to and AFTER performance. Money you and I spend to get here. Not salary. And should not be factored into earnings.

I disagree. If you work 8 hours a week and get one airfare paid, that's a better deal than working 16 hours a week and getting one airfare paid, all other things being equal. And besides, my employer pays for the airfare whether I go or not.
