Just wondering Guy,
Did you count me as one of the recuiters?
Just for the record, since the start of my sabbatical, in Sept '04, I've not been the head of the Language Center here. Therefore, I'm not currently the person making hiring decisions. I am still envovled in the process, but I'm certainly not in the position to pay for someone to come to Mexico for an interview. |

If true, Gypsy would be only the second place I've ever heard of in Mexico that would pay someone's expenses to come in for an interview. In the other case, they even paid to ship the person back from whence they came after bombing the interview!
No, Melee, I wasn't counting you. There's also a distinction to be made, I believe, between recruiters working for several schools - as one sees in Korea, a recruiter working for one school (or school owner in many cases), a job placement recruiter - most prevalent in Mexico, and I guess I'll add TEFL/CELTA course recruiters. For the record, I would fall into the last category if I were paid to do it. |

Hey, I have no problem with anybody trying to recruit me here either. I even posted my resume on this board in the Post Your Resume section.
So if anybody is looking for a certified ESL teacher with experience and an MA from a prestigious university, plus bilingual to boot, and has all legal papers here already, I'm all yours! (for the right price!)
I seem to be having no luck just sending out CVs by e-mail.
PM me.

If someone posts here saying they want to find a position in mexico and a poster who works at a school pms them about an opporuntity than I think that is good community spirit. If Colegio Gipsy is as good as cwc says then he is doing everyone a favor. If Melee pms someone about a job at her university then that is a favor. If a recruiter, who doesn't charge teachers for their service pms someone about a position then I don't think that is a problem.
But if a recruiter sends pms to people offerring their service, ie the teacher pays, then that is completely wrong. From things I have seen on the internet, there are several companies charging teachers to find jobs in Mexico. We mustn't forget that we, as teachers, are performing a service in Mexico and we are bringing value to the school, not the other way around. |

Danielita,
You shot youself in the foot. I posted that to Lilli not you. We WERE fully prepared to have you down. We brought a guy from England last year. We regularly bring people from Canada. The cost of a flight is negligible. We have 14 ESL teachers and we do still need a few. I posted that to Lilli because I was in the middle of a squabble and I didnt trust her. You got caught up in the moment and screwed yourself. NOTE to the 3 others, DO NOT believe what is said on this site. cwc

| Wow, what a professional way to communicate with future teachers, their initials on a public forum saying they are "still on" for an expense paid interview. I'm sure they can hardly wait. Cripes, every day is a new surprise with CWC, "only a teacher". |

I don't know how it is throughout the entire country, but in the city where I live, most schools have enough people showing up in person applying for any openings the schools might have. Local employers almost never consider hiring anyone who isn't already here on the ground looking for work. |

Just so you know, anyone can post their resume. But if you try to look at the resumes, you have to PAY! I don't think many schools in Mexico, take Dave up on the proposition. |

Yes, I noticed that you have to pay to see the resumes posted here, and I've wondered just how much exposure we're really getting. I also posted resumes on such sites as occ.com and latpro, and nothing seems to have resulted from those postings either.
I also realize that just posting resumes online or sending them out via e-mail is like cold call selling, maybe that's why I haven't had much luck doing these things. Then again, I've only been doing it for about three weeks--probably not enough time to really see if this is an effective way for one to present themselves to potential employers.
These things are easy to do however. I need to take Ben's advice and just start knocking on doors...problem is finding the time to do it since I do work during the daytime. |

Sorry about the triple post.
As to recruiters and jobs-just be careful. Heck, I have had to be relentless about finding my next position. Constant foot work when possible - ceaseless vigilance over the internet to find a job in the city that I wanted and the salary range that I am looking for. Basically, eight moths of effort and for my present position, one year. I am still smarting from accepting my present post blindly.
Up the flagpole:
I have talked to others on this post before about the matter of trying to format an impartial (if possible) rating system for schools in Mexico. Other theaters of teaching have this resource-most notably South Korea.
True, when in a bad spot one can leave-but there is always the problem of keeping a legal work permit and the time lapse between renewal and salary between gigs.
Happy Saint Paddys Day.

| Sam, that`s we fly people in. To make sure we are happy with them AND they are happy with us. WE DO FLY UNHIRED CANDIDATES HOME. A plane ticket is a small price to pay. |

I'm afraid my knowledge of Mexico is limited to the film "Man on Fire" which didn't exactly inspire me to want to go anywhere near the place. It certainly would be very low on my list of desired destinations but ...a free return flight to Mexico City! Seems incredible if true which I doubt. Where should I send my CV? And when if shortlisted would I get my plane ticket? |

Aw c'mon it can be fun. Spend your days in Mexico City dodging bullets and roving bands of kidnappers, and your evenings in nightclub shootouts. Keeps the blood pumping.
They have a sign at the airport when you arrive.

And someday, Hollywood will make a movie portraying George W. Bush as a great and noble leader...
Don't believe everything you see in the movies. |
