I've worked for three schools in turkey so far- one kolej, one dershane, and a university. All three have dealt with the paperwork for my work permit and all three paid for it. I have never had to work illegally, which I now realise is a small miracle. As well, I've been able to save a lot, live well, travel well, etc, etc, falan, filan. The dershane holidays and pay sucked (relatively) but I loved the work. The students were a blast. I have a lot more holidays and housing allowance and salary at the university but I have to say the work is less...mmm...enjoyable. The kids can be stressful- but you can easily stash away about a thousand dollars a month without thinking about it, while still living on your own (I have a 3 bdrm flat, close to taksim), going out, and travelling during the holidays. The same goes for kolej work but I can't really comment on that because my years were spent way out in the middle of anatolia in a city with no bars or clubs or... well, they have tea gardens...I could save 300 out of a 600 pound salary...while still heading to Ist on weekend and NY and Paris etc during hols. It is possible.

I've clocked up about 12 years of being legal and about 2 years of being illegal.(my choice) At the moment I'm illegal, working two part-time jobs and making more money than I ever have Confused
Just out of interest how much does the residence permit cost at the moment? The most difficult thing about getting the residence permit is finding the time to flaff about all day in the yabanci subesi in aksaray.

ray: check out the kultur 2000 thread. for some info there and they won't get you a visa, they just don't know how or are organized enough, even if they say they will.

istanbul is becoming more expensive but you can still save up a bit and travel too
