I did the same thing as Spiderman Too for speaking examinations and it worked quite well. Two times people attempted to cheat. One was failed and the other was dismissed from the room and had to wait her turn (she tried to help a friend) in the very cold, December, hallway.
For writing (I'm teaching a third year university writing course that focuses on creative writing, the stronger students LOVE it while the weaker students HATE that I am making them write stories and -gasp- haiku) I decided to do away with the textbook altogether this term but I do occasionally use the textbook from their literature class for examples. Now I just have to figure out how to teach them how to write notes. The last time I checked notes one person had copied word for word what I had put on the blackboard; including a doodle I had put on the board at one point. Another person had repeated the same word on her page about twenty times (quatrain) but hadn't bothered writing down what it meant. The exam will be a short multiple choice section based on my lectures, a slightly longer applied stuff section (find the rhyme scheme, etc.) and then, the largest component by far, an essay / creative writing section. |
