Miss Beth,

In answer to your question:

Quote:
Can anyone tell me which village, city to live in to be as close as possible to Katowice airport?

To be honest if your partner is working in Katowice then I would strongly recommend living in the city. Commuting in and out of the city is horrible with gridlock everyday during rush hour (a two mile journey has been known to take over an hour). This will get better as road construction work is completed but there is no guarantee of when that will be. In my opinion the convenience of living in Katowice far outweighs the inconvenience of living in a village closer to the airport.

Katowice itself isn't such a big place; the population is around 150,000 - it certainly never feels like you are living in a huge metropolis. I've posted some pictures on my homepage - it may give you a feel for the town:

Access to the airport from the city is good. There is a regular bus service which takes around 35 minutes - costing 18PLN. Also one of the airlines provides a transfer service. A taxi will cost you around 100PLN and take about 20 minutes.

Hope this is of some help.

Stephen

Beth,

I've heard of a job offer in Macau for between 1,700 to 2,500 British pounds a month.

Would you say that's good money for Macau?

I'm not leaving Shanghai, but it's good to know what else is out there.

I know that if Macau is anything like Hong Kong then money just keeps disappearing.

I think Hong Kong may be the most expensive city I've ever been too.

Well, it's not bad, but you have to keep in mind that prices have definitely increased here. It all depends if you have a wife and kids or not.
Rent can be very high :from 6000 HK$ if you're not fussy. If you want a nice place, you'd be looking at 8-10000 HK$.
Food is cheap if you like local food. It's probably different from Shanghai food since there is quite a bit of Portuguese gastronomic influence. However, if you feel like a nice juicy steak, it's pretty expensive.

Well, there does seem to be a continual outflow of money: bills, rent, bits and pieces and metres for parking spaces ( Parking is a real problem if you have a car.) But that's the same everywhere, isn't it?

I think you can make a lot of money here and it definitely is a lot cheaper than Hong Kong, but then there's living here. You usually change your mind about loving or hating the place about 10 times a day. If you want more info, especially if you have familly, as that changes the money saving side, then let me know.

I PMed the job to you.

I haven't been to Macau but I have lived in Guangdong for a whole summer and I've been to Hong Kong.

I'd say stick it out for awhile. It takes about 6 months (and language lessons) to get over the culture shock of living in China and nothing can prepare you for it except perhaps understanding China's recent history particularly the cultural revolution.

I have been to Katowice though and from what I know of the two I'd definately stay in Macau for at least a year before going anywhere else.

Then again there's always Shanghai. Shanghai is an easy place to westerners to live. We've even got Walmart here.

If you do go to Poland you can do a lot better than Katowice, unless you like the factory town look.

Good luck.

I'd have to agree with GregfromCali, in that it's MUCH better, especially in a place like Katowice, to live as close as possible to the centre. Also it's usually safer... specially at night.

Best of luck.

Yes and it's also a much better place to get lung cancer.

Then come and teach English in beautiful Katowice, the city of perpetual black skies.

We even hire Aussies too, if they're willing to pretend they are British. Wink
