Re: Justin's money theory - It could be that people with money feel threatened by people who do not have money (i.e. the less fortunate might try to swindle the opulent out of their wealth). People without money have nothing to lose by being friendly and everything to gain. It's a good theory, IMHO. Very Happy

hey thats how i feel!

i mean just being a 'white american' in 'developing countries'.. and as much as i don't mind being that and in fact i love it.. but 90% of the friendliness is out of the 'hey its a walking-ATM machine' variety. Makes you REAL weary real fast!

Also having lived in Manhattan for a few years.. I quickly learned that anyone who says anything to you in the streets wants something from you.. there just isn't any reason any other way they'd say something to you (directions being the exception of course - and even then..) - what does the receiver of such solicitations expect - you'll become best friends and start hanging out? kinda makes u weary real quick after you've become separated from your wallet a few times.

Honestly speaking.. when I was a kid with long hair and no money and looked half-homeless half of the time.. no one wanted or expected anything from me ever.. and I was always friendly to absolutely everyone at anytime. Now that I'm a somewhat seemingly responsible adult with a decent haircut.. I can't walk down half of the city streets in the U.S. without someone trying to bum a quarter.. let alone my favorite cities of Southeast Asia.

I agree with the money thing. It does seem to be an inverse relationship with the amount of $ you have. We'll I would qualify by saying, I think it is the pursuit of $ that causes the unfriendlyness. If you had a guaranteed trustfund I think it would be much different than if you were an executive at a fortune 500 company. The preservation of scare resources seems to be the unfriendly variable.

Getting back to the weather thing.......here is Seattle we definately have a problem with the lack of light(Seasonal Affective Disorder) which I think contributes to a weird passive agressive behavior we experience.
