To be honest, I can understand why many employers went to allowances rather than provide furnished housing. One did get tired of listening to everyone whinge about how so-and-so had a better location, bigger balconies, better view, nicer appliances, etc.

Educational institutions generally do a very poor job of managing employee housing. Incompetence is a good enough reason for them to give cash-in-lieu. They should do the same with all benefits.

Thanks toall (especially Bindair) who have provided input. I now have an idea of the best way to negotiate. It would seem that a base salary should be agreed on...and benefits like employer provided housing, medical, relocation, paid home travel, negotiated differently. Even with the new law, I'd be hesitant to go with a housing allowance. The fact that I am single, with simple tastes, means that I don't need anything more than a 1 bedroom apt. I would imagine that should be easy for the employer to provide. A car and driving there...seems to be a different matter altogether.

Few things end up to be as simple as they might seem when it comes to teaching in the Gulf. Cool

This is why my repeated advice to newbies to the Middle East is to be sure to pack their patience and sense of humor. One doesn't need to bring one's cultural assumptions of logic though. Laughing

My ancestors are from that part of the world, so I won't be bringing cultural assumptions of logic. Are you currently working in the Gulf, VS?

Your ancestry should help out with the common misunderstandings then. Cool

I am happily retired after my appr 16 years around the Middle East.

From a recruiter:
Quote:

Salary for faculty and administrators at Cornell/Qatar are equivalent to those paid for comparable positions at the Cornell Medical College in New York. Additionally, very attractive housing, tuition for school age children(at a private school) and funds for annual trips back to the states are also provided. Of course, salary levels are predicated on background and experience, but I have found them to be generous in that regard.

His comments suggest that WCMC-Q doesn't anticipate paying a premium for working in the warm, sunny embrace of Qatar , rather than the icy grip of New York.

They also suggest that at least for faculty, housing will be provided.

Useful information. The ad I saw indicated that there would be a foreign benefits package. Think that involved a housing allownace, travel back to country of origin etc. It sounds like an interesting and exciting institution since everything is brand new. My process is still in play so will see how it all turns out.
