But a lot of people send a lot of time on these boards communicating with native English speakers. |
Well, I often come here to hear about other people's experiences. I like to learn what opportunities are out there.
Furthermore, I don't miss home. I just sometimes have free time. Just like if you were back home, you don't spend every minute with friends. you often come home after work with little to do. Especially if you are not living in a metropolis like Toyko, Bangkok, Berlin, LA, etc. |

avolkiteshvara, I am not trying to be a jack a## but I think you are very short sighted in regards to why ex-pats go abroad. I am guessing that many people go abroad for reasons other than being immersed in a foreign culture.
For example some people go to korea to pay of student loans quickly. With just a B.A. in hand and no experience, where else can you save $1000-1500 U.S. a month.
Some people want to find a foreign girlfriend or have heard that it is easier to pick up foreign women. Since most women don't go crazy over Asian men, this one is more for men than woman but I think quite a few women do like South America and the men there.
Some people don't want to join the rat race back home working 9-5 for two weeks of vacation a year. |

...the sense of community, the tidbits of invaluable information, the flaming abuse, the corny puns...
In the pre-internet days the ex-pat pub(s) and my shortwave radio (thank God for the English language broadcasts!) were my mental health breaks from the periodic spells of homesickness and/or culture fatigue. |
