Well, looks like it�s going to be UPS after all. Here�s a quick summary of options for anyone else wanting to send stuff:

The �Snowbird� option, ie getting someone else to take it into the US, then mail it internally, is definitely the cheapest way to do it. All you need to do is find someone you trust.

The Sepamex option is, well, not an option! They have no idea what they�re doing and anything valuable/interesting is likely to be stolen.

The Mexicana option: Mexican airlines have cargo services, available even for individual parcels. This is also a cheap way to do it. Only caveat: in the US, they only deliver to major cities.

The US courier option: the cheapest seems to be UPS, at roughly $350 for administration and $65 per kg. Next-day delivery guaranteed.

The Mexican courier option: Estafeta is also roughly $350 for admin and $65 per kg. But delivery is "en dos dias - mas o menos - tal vez un poquito mas" ...
