Well, if you are interested in the middle East, I would certainly suggest Bahrain. The pay is very good and moreover, life there is comfortable. There are many private universities and colleges which have recently started. They all need ESL/EFL teachers. But you must hurry up: usually first semester starts in August/September. With your certificates, I am sure you are qualified to teach there as English language teacher. Good luck |

Have you been drinking.
There are few jobs in Bahrain and the money is very poor. |

You said salary would be a big priority because you're paying off debt but you are unsure of taking a TEFL certificate because it will eat into your savings. A bit of an oxymoron, don't you think?
Anyway, I definitely recommend getting some kind of paper to go along with your experience. Like previous posters mentioned, I think many conversation-type schools might be afraid of your experience, but on the other hand you could probably land some kind of university teaching job if you could supplement your experience with a certificate/diploma. Best would be an MA but it will require a couple of years to complete. |

Well dear Thrifty, it shows you are out touch with the recent developments in the world of ESL/EFL. The salary that an ESL instructor gets in Bahrain is much higher than that in China, Thailand, Korea and other European countries. An MA in ESL/EFL will get you $2500 per month + free accomodation+ allowances+ medical insurance+ free airfare. The English Lanaguage Centre at Bahrain University urgently needs ESL instructors; The Royal College of Women also seeks English language instructors and more.
Try it. |

If I was earning 1300 pounds a month - about twice my current salary - I'd think that was great! I could easily bank several hundred pounds a month. |

BA is far as I'm going. Really going to waste thousands of pounds just to get more money in TEFL that won't break even or repay the loan for the MA? |

Hi
I have also been searching for a country for the past 4 months and have decided on Korea primerily for the amount of money I can send home on a bi-monthly basis!
It seems that I can easily save 500 a month in Korea and would be in a position to do this as soon as a start earning money there!
I have also been toying with the idea of Taiwan but with the rent to consider as well as a 3 months bond I believe that I will save more in Korea and although I have 150 p/m student loans to consider can still live comfortably.
The additional money I save in Korea will hopefully put me in a far better financial situation 12 months down the line when I look for teaching positions in Thailand, Taiwan, Peru, Brazil, Phillipeanes, Indonesia, Malaysia etc etc
NICE!!! |

I have heard that they even pick you up at the airport when you first arrive. |

Nice jab, thrifty. Your one-liners are often beyond boring but I liked that one.
And "durks" talked about his/her Korean ambitions. Good luck with that. However, after you start making a decent salary I think you may not want to give that up to live in places like Thailand and the like. It would be better off to find a position in Korea that would give you the free time to grab a cheap flight to visit the countries you listed.
Apologies to the OP for hi-jacking.. |

Yes, far better to work in Korea - and vacation in Thailand - than to work in Thailand not earn enough to vacation anywhere. |

Well if you invest about 5 years savings from Korea in a rental property you can just move to Thailand and have the same income as someone who is teaching there.
That would be around $75000 + the rental income you receive for the next 5 years. Some homes are more expensive but I know where to buy houses for $100,000-$120,000. |

The will not pick you up because you'll step off the plane drunk and angry. Or just angry. |

Hi itchyitchy,
I'm a recent university grad from Canada. I really want to teach abroad. I've heard Korea is the best place for making money? Is 1,600,000 a good salary to start at? Can you really hook me up with a school that provides airfare and a FREE studio apartment? I'm really getting excited, but I need to start soon. Can you get back to me as quickly as possible about this tremendous opportunity? |
1,600,000 Won is not a good salary. 2,000,000 a month with the usual fringe benefits, unless you are very experienced, is the negotiating line. As for jobs use this site:
http://www.pusanweb.com
there are at least 100 jobs a month here that advertise locally for Pusan; which is probably the nicest city in Korea to live and work in. |
