I don't get mad very often at my students but when I do I shoot a really awful look at them. I don't say anything, I just glare. So my students know that if I'm glaring at them they've crossed the line. Some of them have learned to mimic it and do it to other students.
When I was in Korea, however, I was teaching 3 and 4 year olds, and the "look" was lost on them. It really wouldn't have mattered anyway because they were too cute to get mad at for long. Finally I stared adding the Korean word for "Do you want to die?" in with my glares. So eventually I had these children returning my glare and asking me if I wanted to die.
I also have the habit of singing quietly to myself while the students are doing work. In one class it was always Ruby Tuesday, because one of the students names was Ruby. Eventually the entire class of 6 year olds sang Ruby Tuesday quietly to themselves while working. |

It's just one word?!? How do you say it?
(It would be evil fun to shout from buses as I go through Shanghai's Korean area! Not that I would actually do that, though! ) |

Someone who knows more Korean than I do can correct me, but there are two ways to say "Do you want to die", one is serious, the other isn't. The way I said it was the non-serious way, which is:
Chu-ga-lay (spelled phonetically)
I can't remember the serious way anymore.
SO feel free to say it to any Korean's you know. They will probably laugh. IF you can't scare a 3 year old with it, you probably won't scare a 33 year old. |
