In a very general vein, I can say that most teachers at private schools in Calgary are making between 20 and 26 CAD/hour, and most schools don't pay for prep time.
I am not teaching at any private school in Calgary, but have contact with the teaching community because my spouse is currently based there.
I do not live in Calgary - but I visit pretty regularly. |

Maybe I should add that this salary that is perhaps average does not afford a particularly good living by Calgary standards..... |

In Canada and the US, it is not traditional to be mum about wages - particularly as they are wages and not salary;
I intend no offense - it just seems that in your part of the world, such information would be more readily forthcoming. |
Au contraire... in Canada people rarely talk about how much they make and it is a very private matter. Sometimes we'll say things like "I make more than you", or "I just make the minimum wage", but anything more detailed than that is a closely guarded secret. As I said, I don't even know what my co-workers earn... it could be more (if they have been at the school longer than me) or less (if they just joined us). Also, policies change... For example, when I started at LSC, I was told I'd get a .50/hour increase after 3 months employment. That policy was dropped after I was hired and the teachers who the school hired after me were denied this little bonus.
As I said, questions about salary, etc. are good questions to ask the schools. Most will be free with the GENERAL facts, but will NOT devulge details about any individuals. Nor will I!
No offense taken at your question, and I hope you were not offended by my response. On an international forum like this it is important to keep an open mind to cultural/political differences that appear and to react accordingly. |
That's interesting, because the folks I knew from Vancouver (when I lived in CA) were pretty forthcoming.
I didn't clarify very well, I guess. I wasn't asking about anyone's personal salary - only what the average starting teacher wage (or at least a range) generally is. Providing THAT should not be secret. If it is, sounds like a place I wouldn't want to be.
Moscow varies widely; some pay as little as $600 a month, but only inexperienced young people go for that. People with more experience tend to put one or two "jobs" together at say, $20/hr with a variable number of private lessons, so a person who's making less than $1,500 a month full-time ought to consider upgrading his employment or getting out altogether. |

VanKen,
I worked for a number of years in Canada, and I agree that in face to face conversation, few would divulge their salary details. But that is not the environment in which my original questions were posed.
Can I find you as "VanKen" in the Calgary phone book? The point of the anonymous veil provided by our online names is to allow freer distribution of information, without reference to true identity.
Thankyou rusmeister and spiral78 for providing info of value. |

As a Vancouver-born and raised Canuck, I'll take a stab at this...
It depends a lot who is asking the question. If a complete stranger asked me, I would have said it was none of his/her business. If a co-worker, friend or family member had asked me, I would have been okay with giving them a rough estimate of my salary. |

The fact is, I don't really know what an "average starting teacher wage" in Calgary is... This was my first job in this city after working elsewhere, and I hadn't researched much myself before landing this position.
I would strongly recommend that you contact some schools if you are interested in this subject. The good schools will be forthcoming.

Please re-read my first post in this thread. I gave a lot of personal info about myself that does NOT make me as anonymous on this forum as you might like to think.

Agreed. I have never met anyone on this forum in the flesh. |
