It hasnt happened to me yet, but i have heard of meetings where the Japanese faculty is discussing in Japanese whether or not to renew the foreign teacher's contract for the next year, even while the object of their discussion is sitting in the room in front of them.

In my old private HS, the English department meetings were held totally in Japanese, despite the fact that half of the native speakers couldn't follow it well enough.

And, on countless occasions, there were discussions about classes that only I taught, yet nobody bothered to direct any of the flow of conversation toward me, in either language. Very irritating!
I can imagine!

It's blatant racism, yet I'm sure they didn't give it a second thought...

OK Khyron, I am re-reading Glenski's post and re-commenting on your assertion that it was blantant racism. Bearing in mind that I am to make no comments whatsoever about the world outside of that described in Glenski's post I still find it difficult how you could assume that his high school teachers were motivated by racism. I can definitely see room for frustration as Glenski pointed out that the conversation was never directed towards him in either language. But there is not enough evidence here to support the idea it was racist (which is a serious accusation and shouldn't be made lightly).

I know that to work in a Universiuty you need a masters and to have some works published but what do you need to work (qualifaction and experince wise!) in Elementary and High schools?? Do you need to be fluent in Japanese??

Hi I have been working in the same private High school now going on 5 years and count myself extremely lucky, I was told that 2 years experience was necessary. Holidays are great!. Unfortunately it isn't directly with the school but through a small company. But after reading these posts sometimes I wonder if it isn't better? I don't have to attend meetings but I guess the job isn't as secure as a position directly with the school. These kind of positions are becoming less available now because companies like interac are bidding for all these private school contracts. anyway that is another story.
As far as japanese goes, not really required except with staff occassionally Smile Good luck!
