Hi Phil_b;

I read your post and I couldn't help smiling... Earlier I was just thinking that I proabably wouldn't stay in B.A. longer than 3-4months just to get my bearings, and I would end up moving to Rosario and staying there..

I'm glad to hear that trecking to Uruguay from there isn't too bad... I'm just hoping it will be easy finding roomates to share an appartment or house with, so I wouldn't need a guarantor..

And yes the curency thing can be confusing.. From what I have seen the average salary for an English teaching job in Argentina is 5$US an hour (15 Arg.pesos)..

That's why I'm thinking of going to a smaller/cheaper town..

Thanks for the insight!
Sabine.

Regarding teaching in other towns, it is possible but when you go south, it gets more expensive. Bariloche was my favourite city in Argentina and I would move there if I had enough money to retire, really the place is just amazing. Unfortunately, there are only about one or two schools there and they don't pay much. Sorry to say but I was in the same situation as you just a while ago, and I had to leave Argentina all together.

As for going to another south american country, try Colombia or Chile. Colombia is great, not many tourists and the people are super friendly. In addition, there are quite a few schools in Bogota and Cali that pay well with respect to the cost of living which I found to be just a bit more than Argentina. As for Chile, there are lots of schools in Santiago, but its a big city. Hope this helps. Take care.

Ah.... Thank you, Phil -- that's definitely where my confusion came into play. Quite a big difference! Now I'm definitely reconsidering my decision....

HI Supertraveller;

Thanks for the other country options, but I'll still go there (B.A.) and take a look... I've never been to Argentina before so I need to experience it for myself.. We'll see..

It's interesting that you mention Colombia as a good place to teach.. Wouldn't safety be a serious issue there because of the FARC and kidnappings??

Thanks, Sab

I am actually semi-retired in Rosario. It is leaps and bounds more affordable than BA! I like it because it is a good size city that has alot to offer.
I live off of investments and savings so work is not an issue with me. I am thinking of buying a cyber-cafe, but that is more out of boredom. The job market is alot different then BA, but I have only met one other native English speaker here so you might be able to corner the market!

Hi Stevie-G;

Thanks! Ecouraging to hear.. I will at least visit Rosario.. If the job market is too scarce, I can always move on elsewhere..

Rent in B.A. is my major concern, but being alone all I need is to rent a room, as opposed to an entire appartment..

If there are few native English speakers in Rosario, there are probably even less French speakers there, which I have the option to teach..

Thanks again and hopefully we'll meet in Rosario,
Sabine
