Genski,
Thanks for the apartment threads..most of them appear to be bad links but a few of them had some good stuff.
Based on what I've read so far, korea probably offers more roomier space for the buck. I've lived in tight spaces before and I know what a drag they can be. |

you make it sound as if you are the first asian to be hired in japan...

If an employer doesnt want to hire you because you are not white or you might be 'bad for business' then the problem is with them and their perception of a native speaker. If they dont hire you because of your looks you dont want to work for them anyway.
I know one school in Osaka that specifically hires non-whites at its branch

Its nothing personal and its not you but we seem to get an Asian-American or Asian-Canadian about once a month who gets it in their head that they will be turned back at the airport or laughed out of the room because they are not white even though they are native speakers.
Discrimination does exist on many levels when hiring language teachers but its against foreigners in general and not against specific ethnic groups (as long as you have the 'right' passport you are OK.
Some even try to use their 'Japanese' ancestry or Chinese ancestry to score brownie points as if they are more 'Asian' than a caucasian from Vancouver. As I have mentioned on another thread, Language teaching is about sellling a product and packaging. Asians can and do work here, including native Japanese speakers. You are hired for your native skills and Canadian passport not because of your ethnicity. Non-whites have worked here for years.
Sarcastic humor doesnt not travel well on written forums and its very easy for your words to be misinterpreted, especially if you are trying to crack a joke or be sarcastic. |
