I read an article a couple of days ago that China is installing equipment that will block the use of mobile phones at Unis. Now I can't find it.

Obviously it depends on your school and what they think. At our school we are very strict and the students are told both by their head teacher and us FT's that if caught with phones/MP3 players we are to take them off them and stand on them. The students accept this and luckily I have not had to do it. But teachers have with the full backing of the school. We are there to teach not to let the kids ride roughshod over the teachers. I have yet to see any evaluation forms on FT'ers. I would be interested to see one though. Do they get all students to fill out one on their FT or do just the head teachers do it?If it is given over to the students they could say anything especially if you are a strict teacher. Also anybody could write or fill out these forms apart from the students and say anything especially if your contract is up for negotiation. I personally would not believe a thing like that if it was put in front of me. If it was said to be done by a student I would demand a meeting with the student with the piece of paper in my hand to see if the student actually did it or if the school was just trying to get out of pay rises.

V'mort, perhaps I have a bad attitude, but I couldn't care less whether a school keeps or discards me based on my popularity with the students. I care what kind of teacher I am, how effective I am at getting the most out of my students.

i understand that we should be concerned about doing a good job and that your popularity with students shouldnt be a factor in that. but my experience tells me that classes where too much discipline is imposed just cause antagonistic feelings between teacher and student and that gulf can be difficult or impossible to overcome. my best classes, where the students put out the most effort, are the classes that like me, the classes where the students probably consider me their friend before their teacher. my FT colleague imposes frequent disciplinary measures on his students. i have his former students this term. they tell me exactly what they think of him and it seems they didnt enjoy their time with him. is he a good teacher? i dont know, never seen his classes, but (in china) i dont think you can expect great results if the kids dont like you. thats my opinion......
