| This poll makes me curious... Are there any good stouts in Japan? Last time I visited I saw some imported stuff (Guinness & Chocolate stout) but they were so high in price I would rather find a local brew to enjoy. I'm moving there in a month, so I will need one! |

Yebisu.
Without a doubt. Drink it and you will know. |

| I'm rather nonplussed about Japanese beer in general.... Although they do tend to match up ok with Japanese food. At any rate, Yebisu is decent I suppose. Oh and the Yebisu and Asahi dark brews aren't bad either. |

Both Asahi and Kirin make stout but I've never seen it or drunk it. |

| Asahi, Kirin and Yebisu brew black beer but I don't know if that qualifies as stout. They are basically more like German black beers. Kirin's version is quite sweet but quite good. |

The only place I've seen the Asahi kuro-biiru is at the Asahi brewery near Asakusa. There's a bar there that serves it on tap for like 700 yen a pint. I found it really tasty, but it's kind of sweet for a stout (I think I prefer it to the Yebisu black beer though). It doesn't seem available anywhere else. Never tried the Kirin kuro-beer.
And yea, I'd otherwise go with normal Yebisu for the best Japanese beer.
BTW, if anyone's looking for decent-priced foreign beer, you might just try Don Quixote. Surprisingly they have not too bad a selection (talking about the one in Shinjuku close to Korea-town). You can buy a few Belgian beers like Chimay or Duvel (I think I even saw Leffe blonde once but I might have been imagining things), or a few other nice European beers for cheap enough. |

Asahi Stout
and
Asahi Black
are 2 different beasts. Asahi black should be available at most beer gardens. |

That's cool, I didn't even realise there was a bona-fide Asahi "stout". The dark one I tried was quite nice, but I'll have to give the stout a try someday if I come across it. I never noticed it the stores (maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough). |

| I'll have to be sure to look for some of those darker ones, and the asahi stout. The only Japanese beer I've had is the regular asahi and kirin that are available in the States. I didn't really care for them. Oddly enough, the only beer I had last time I was in Japan was the guinness I just complained about being overpriced (what can I say.. I couldn't resist). |
