This is because few, if any people, ever bother to treat batteries the way they should. You are experiencing battery memory effect, mostly because I'll bet you never let the battery completely drain before completely charging it up again. You would notice the same thing on rechargable camera batteries and a laptop if you have one.
It is a technological hurdle that hasn't kept pace with advances in other areas. |

I don't know that that's really true anymore...
I've had a nokia for over two years and it holds it charge just fine - I admit not like when it was new, but I only need to charge it once a week or less. When I bought the phone they told me this battery didn't need to be fully drained before charging it again - so I charge it whevener I feel like it's a bit too low for comfort- and it's fine as I said.
Maybe it depends on the brand of phone you have. |

Batteries don't last long, get a new battery. You will see the performance return to its original glory.
Between my wife and I, we have 4 cellphones. But we are not in Mexico paying to receive calls or for making calls. While most of the world is seeing cell phone call rates dropping, Mexico has seen prices either stable or rising. I would love to know just how much Telcel is fleecing from Mexicans. |

I went to a Telcel customer service center today (had to clear up a problem where I didn't get the "free" minutes I was supposed to get when I bought a new cell phone) and asked what the actual rates were. The special rate I get for adding 10 numbers to my "amigo" list is 1 peso per minute, for local numbers. Everybody else I get charged $4 pesos per minute, plus IVA. (IVA is 15%). Receiving long distance calls costs $2.5 pesos a minute.
At the current conversion rate for dollars, ($11.30 pesos to the dollar), that means the special rate in U.S. dollars is about ten cents a minute, and the regular rate is 40 cents a minute to make a cell call to a LOCAL number. I didn't even bother to ask what the rate is for long distance, much less international calls. And you pay over a quarter a minute to receive a non-local call.
How on earth anybody can call this affordable is beyond me. I think in the U.S. I was averaging less than 2 cents a minute for cell calls. So prices in Mexico are about five, to 20 times higher.
Perhaps short-lived batteries for cell phones are a blessing, can keep you from going bankrupt.
Carlos Slim is worth about $30 billion dollars according to Fortune 500. That's about $339,000,000,000 pesos at current exchange rates. How much does a starting ESL teacher earn per hour, about $70 pesos? That's working more than half a million years, straight through to earn that kind of dough. |

| If you have access to an internet connection, you should check out an internet telephone service like Skype or Yahoo Voice. Calls to the US/Canada are about 1 peso for 10 minutes! |

And you can use Yahoo Talk to call numbers within Mexico too. |

Freddy M: Those rates have been the same for more than 7 years. While prices have fell in just about every other country, telecom rates remain high in Mexico, too high given the local economic realities in Mexico.
All of my internet surfing at home is done via grps on my motorola phone. I basically get it for free on my prepaid plan, 40 hours for every $7.50 I spend on local or international calls. I can only imagine how many thousands of pesos I would be paying in Mexico for the same kind of arrangement. My prepaid plan is the most expensive prepaid plan at 12 cents a minute for calls anywhere in Thailand. I pay 12 cents a minute to call the USA/Canada as well.
Last year when I was visiting Mexico, I was shocked at the way prices had stayed so high on telecom. Never fear, I am willing to bet we can have this same conversation next year and every year after. |

Watch out for lock codes if you are taking a cell phone from Canada or the US to Mexico. I bought an expensive new phone while in Canada the last time and made sure it was tri-mode, as I had been assured that tri-mode phones could be used abroad.
It turned out that the phone could be used from Mexico at an exorbitant rate. When I tried to get a new chip, the lock code prevented its use. Fortunately I found someone to help me out, but it wasn't worth the bother and expense. Not to mention, I couldn't use all the features. I was better off buying a cell in Mexico and using pre-paid time. |
